Alibi Ale Works is an artisan brewery located in North Lake Tahoe CA. We redefine classic styles to create unique handcrafted beer.
Who’s your Alibi? Rich Romo + Kevin Drake = Alibi Ale Works. Kevin Drake is an award-winning homebrewer who’s been honing his craft for more than 15 years. Rich Romo is a serial entrepreneur who combines business savvy with the technical knowledge of the skilled-trades in HVAC and construction. Both North Tahoe locals have a deep passion for craft-beer, brewing, and have the collective talents to create world-class beer.
What’s your Alibi? Alibi Ale Works will be handcrafting beers in relatively small, 3-barrel batches (~100 gallons) in order to offer a wide range of beer styles/flavors and be responsive to community feedback. You can expect progressive interpretations of traditional beer styles as well as experimental beers using local and non-traditional ingredients, wild/sour fermentation techniques, and wood barrel aging. A few of our favorite, go-to beer styles that you can expect are saisons, imperial stouts, and “session” beers with low alcohol and big flavor. Alibi Ale Works beer will be available through our tasting room, CSA-style weekly growler subscription club, limited bottles, and select tap accounts throughout North Tahoe and Truckee.
Where’s your Alibi? Alibi Ale Works is laying down roots in Kings Beach, California, on the north shore of Lake Tahoe Calif. Rich is a north Tahoe native and Kevin is a long-time resident. We love the Kings Beach community and are excited to help fuel the revitalization that’s already underway. Kings Beach has never had a brewery (never!), and we are committed to creating a brewery worthy of this community. We are still working to secure right space, but we intend to create a welcoming, laid back tasting room where you can explore a broad range of beers, chat with neighbors while sipping a pint and fill a growler (1/2 gallon container) to take home with you.
Why you need an Alibi? Alibi Ale Works is not going to be your average brewery. Our small-batch operation is being designed to allow for experimentation, improvisation and adaptability. You can count on Alibi to color outside the conventional lines to create beers that delight your senses, challenge your palette and take your taste buds on many memorable journeys. We want your feedback, and lots of it, so that our beers can be a creative outlet for the entire community. We also believe that a community-supported business should give back to the community in which it resides, and we look forward to the many partnerships and collaborations that will be possible once we open our doors.

What will your money be used for? The most difficult part of opening a brewery is raising the start-up capital to purchase equipment. The bulk of the money we raise through Kickstarter will be used to purchase our 3-barrel brewing system, stainless steel glycol-jacketed fermenters, glycol chillers, pumps, a walk-in refrigerator, and other brewing equipment. We need MANY small donations to achieve our full funding goal by December 21st or Alibi Ale Works will not open! In exchange for your generous support in making Alibi Ale Works a reality, we are offering some awesome rewards at different pledge levels (on your right). We’ve put a lot of thought and effort into the rewards. Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Some brewers assume that if they make great beer, it will sell itself. The biggest risk for us as a start-up artisan brewery is not being able to sell our beer in the fast-growing CA craft beer market. However, our small-batch, community-based business model will help to minimize this risk, as we will be primarily focused on producing beer for our local market in North Tahoe and Truckee. Our CSA-style growler program will provide some steady cash flow in advance of producing the beer, and allow us to experiment with a wide range of beer styles to ensure we’re pleasing the palettes of our customers. Kevin’s 15 years of homebrewing experience and handful of local and national beer awards gives us confidence in our ability to produce consistently tasty beers that will stand out and get noticed in the growing craft beer market.
Installing and adapting to a new brewing system and facility will also present some challenges. However, Rich’s skill set in HVAC, plumbing and construction will be critical to setting up a functional and efficient brewery, as well as troubleshooting the inevitable technical issues as they arise. Our current home brewery already utilizes commercial-style equipment such as pumps, temperature-controlled mashing, temperature-controlled fermentation chambers and the like, so scaling up is the logical next step for us.
Most importantly, a Kickstarter fundraiser is an all or nothing deal. If we don't reach our goal by December 21st, we will not get the funding that we need to get beer into your glass! We truly appreciate your contributions at any level more than you could ever know. You will not only be considered a friend at our brewery but part of our family.
