Spend Some Time with Julie Miller
First up, a couple of updates on the project. Thanks to everyone who has supported the project so far! We're only a few shy of our goal, but we feel confident that we can seal the deal over the next week. We're moving ahead with our production schedule and have locked in the first day as Nov. 17th for our drive around New Jersey with Chris Gethard. Chris has provided a fine itinerary based on his many years there and his time exploring weird things in the Garden State. If you have not picked up his book - A Bad Idea I'm About To Do - I highly recommend that you give it a read.
Okay - now it's time to hear from the fantastic, Julie Miller!
Q: Julie, what’s your role in the project?
A: Co-Director, Producer
Q: Turns out we had some friends in common. Do you think it was destiny that led you to Dale?
A: I’m not sure I believe in destiny, so yes.
Q: What was your first exposure to Dale and what happened?
A: I think it was at a friend's wedding. They held a talent show the night before and many of their friends and family participated. It was a great show! Dale performed with his ex-wife. Even with her up there standing on stage beside him I knew he was mine.
Q: What made you want to take Dale to video?
A: Dale is a rich character and his physicality, his mannerisms, gestures, his world… add a lot of texture to his story. I want folks to see this guy and video seems like the right way to capture Dale and send him around to people all over the planet.
Q: What are you looking forward to most working on this project? A: I suppose I get excited for the unknown (even though it is entirely against my nature.) As a director/producer you plan and plan and no matter what there’s always something a little magical that you never could have anticipated. This is particularly true with this project. James is an improv actor and while we put a lot of thought and preparation into the overall intention of each of these videos, it’s never trying to hit a scripted beat. I try work with James to set up a solid context or structure for Dale to be free in and then I get really excited to see where he goes. I’m a huge Dale fan so to be engaged in this process is real treat and a thrill to say the least.
Q: Are you worried about anything? A: Yes. I’m worried about everything…all the time always. The only time I’m not worried is right after I exercise—there’s about 20 minutes a day when I walk from the gym back to my apartment, make myself a turkey sandwich and pour myself a seltzer and by the time I sit down to eat the sandwich it dawns on me that some time has passed and I haven’t been worrying and I become concerned.
Q: Favorite Dale episode/moment?
A: We shot Dale outdoors on the Gowanus Canal a while back and for some reason toward the end of the shoot it got pretty noisy out there. Cars, trucks, sirens…We were waiting for the noise to die down so that Dale could do his signature “Ha!” But instead it was just getting louder and louder, helicopters, fire trucks, babies crying….the whole time Dale is just in the frame, the pea green canal behind him, holding his big Dale grin and responding under his breath to the cacophony of sounds interrupting him. His mumbled running commentary was pretty priceless. I was in tears.
--We could not be more excited to have Julie working on this project! She's the best!
