We're raising money to print our photographs on 4' by 8' weather-proof paper to beautify the LIRR.
The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) transports over 300,000 passengers daily. The view from the trains’ windows is not only depressing but often ugly as well. There are abandoned and graffitied buildings, and garbage everywhere. Obviously, this part of our Island has been overlooked and violated. We want to give LIRR passengers something beautiful and thought-provoking to look at on their daily commute, to make them rethink the way they view the world around them and relook at the things we tend to take for granted.
We are a group of 13 Photography students from Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood, NY. For our “Special Projects” Class we are working independently on projects of significant personal meaning. We were deeply inspired by a video of the 2011 TED Prize on TED.com HYPERLINK "http://www.ted.com/talks/jr_s_ted_prize_wish_use_art_to_turn_the_world_inside_out.html"http://www.ted.com/talks/jr_s_ted_prize_wish_use_art_to_turn_the_world_inside_out.html A French street artist named JR is the TED prize winner who inspired us to create a collective, public project on a large scale.
We will be producing 4-foot by 8-foot prints of our photographs on weatherproof paper and pasting them to the back sides of buildings along the LIRR route to New York City. The prints are quite expensive. That’s where YOU come in! With your help, we will be able to mount 14 photographs along the LIRR route and make hundreds of thousands of daily commuters lives a little brighter.
We have already begun to create our images and will complete the project by the end of this semester, May 16, 2012. Our team members include: Rob Goldman (our fearless leader), Jessica Nicastro, Dante Crisafulli, Ali Niesen, Nailah Fuller, Will Gonzalez, Liz Dailey, Jessmae Johnson, Kris Nilsen, Mell Mucci, Dagny Gallo, Anthony Tudisco, and Felicia Ruperto.
Thank you for your support!
