About this project

Hedwig Dances, a contemporary dance ensemble under the artistic leadership of Jan Bartoszek is taking a journey to the birthplace and training ground of company dancers, Havana Cuba. Two members of the company will participate in the journey and introduce Jan and her fellow travelers to the schools and dance companies of their formative years.  Among the stops will be the Escuela Nacional de Arte for a reception with dancers and faculty, Danza Contemporanea de Cuba to meet dancers and choreographers and a rehearsal with DanzAbierta. All will be captured by our crew from Bitter Jester Creative and used to create a lasting record of this intimate and exciting tour, a one-of-a-kind, person-to-person Dance and Arts tour of a city and country that is slowly opening to outsiders. To see our entire itinerary, please link to our website at HedwigDances.Org.

This project has a Stretch Goal to raise $12,000 total, $4,500 over our stated goal, to send TWO camera operators to Cuba to better cover the action!

Once we have created our initial video of the Cuba Tour, our larger goal is to create a film telling the broader story of these dancers including additional footage of them living their lives and dancing in Chicago, IL, home of Hedwig Dances. Beyond this Kickstarter campaign and after additional production and post-production work, the final film will be targeted to Dance Film Festivals with a goal of competing for a Dance Film Award.

ALL DONATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE via Hedwig Dances 501c3 status.

Our Touch Cuba Tour Team:

Jan Bartoszek is Founder and Artistic Director of Hedwig Dances, a 27 year-old contemporary dance ensemble creating and performing bold, interdisciplinary collaborations that combine poetic choreography with sculptural artifacts, projected images, and haunting original music. Her artistic credentials include fellowships from the NEA and Illinois Arts Council, mentoring of numerous artists and leadership roles in making dance a vital force at the Chicago Cultural Center. She has choreographed over 55 dances in her career that critics have described as “intelligent, accomplished, moving” (Chicago Tribune) and “poignantly human” (Chicago Reader). She is the co-founder and co-curator of the annual Dance for Camera program at the Chicago Cultural Center.

Maray Gutierrez is the Artistic Associate of Hedwig Dances and a native of Havana, Cuba where she trained at the National School of Dance. Maray has danced throughout Europe, the United States and the Caribbean and has performed for British television and the Venice Opera. She has danced in Europe, the U.S., and the Caribbean and has performed for British television and the Venice Opera. Maray was a principal dancer for Danza Contemporanea de Cuba for ten years and worked with esteemed choreographers Giovanni de Cicco, Donald McKayle, Isidro Rolando, Joaquin Sabaté, Jan Linkens and Marianela Boan, among others.

Victor Alexander is a native of Pinar del Rio, Cuba. He trained at the National Dance School in Havana and was a principal dancer for the National Contemporary Dance Company of Cuba for ten years. He has studied with distinguished teachers such as Donald McKayle, Chuck Davis and Jeffrey Bullock from the United States. Victor has toured and danced throughout Europe, the United States and the Caribbean and has participated in dance festivals such as the American Dance Festival at Duke University, the Holland Dance Festival in Amsterdam and the International Dance Festival in Germany.

Daniel Kullman, as Director of Photography works on the technical side of each production. During the beginning stages of a project he works with coworkers to determine how best to tell our particular story and what tools are needed to make it happen. On set he can be found adjusting the lights, operating a camera, or conferring with the other members of the crew on how to make the project look its absolute best. Daniel loves the process of creating with a team of energetic and like-minded people. Apart from video production, Dan enjoys working on personal photo projects and is currently photographing the food and people surrounding Chicago's Community Sustainable Agriculture, a collective of local farmers who grow organic food.
