A group of new media artists will travel to rural South Korea to research about urbanization and do workshop with local communities.
My name is Taeyoon Choi and I am the organizer of EYEBEAM Roadshow: South Korea. I am an artist who makes participatory performance in public spaces and I’ve been making walking and group tour projects. Recently I began researching about the relationship between urban spaces and natural resources. I invited 5 New media artists who are Eyebeam fellows and a group of Korean artists and activists on a journey to various rivers in South Korea for creative research through intervention and participation. We are far from typical tourists or airport hopping artists, we are going on a roadshow to meet the local people through workshops and also to experience the environmental conditions first hand. The project creates a situation that a group of foreigners and locals to travel to the sites of complex shared narratives, political factors and cultural expectations, hoping to learn from each other as well as interaction with the community. The Roadshow is an opportunity for a week long brainstorming session to create a blue print for creative tools and strategies that will empower the local communities to advocate for environmental justice. We will travel from Seoul to Busan, stopping by Naesungchun, Nakdong river and Geum gang and Gosam reservoir. If you are in Korea, visit us in these places!

Designing and publishing a book.
We want to make a book from this roadshow. It will have our photographs, interviews, hand drawn maps, tour diaries, and ideas for the next step. We want to make a book because it often exceeds the usual lifespan of an website and one can have a tangible experience of the project through the book. The text will be in English and Korean and it will be about 100 pages. The book will be designed by talented Eroon Kang in Brooklyn and printed in Seoul, and then shipped to Manhattan. The estimated time for completion of the book is around end of October in 2011. Your support will realize the cost for printing and shipping.
A public event in New York City
After we are done with this amazing journey, we want to share our stories with friends in the city at Eyebeam Art and Technology Center in October. The event will be a presentation and discussion with the participating artists. The event will be held at Eyebeam's space in west Chelsea. There will be a private reception for those who support us for more than $200. We hope to have our book published by this time, so you can come pick up a copy and have yours signed by the artists. This will be a fun event!

Where are we going?
8.17~27. 2011
Han River: is the heart of Seoul and the symbol of modernization and urbanization of South Korea. You might remember Han river from the film 'Host' directed by Bong Joon Ho.
Nam Han River: has a giant dam that controls the natural rain water from Han river. We will visit an organic farm that has been resisting development plans.
Nae Sung Chun: is an untouched sandy river with a well preserved ecosystem. There is a dam construction planned in Nak Dong River scheduled to start this September, which will sink this river. We will spend 3 days here to research and document the river.Busan: is the second largest city in South Korea and a port city at the end of the peninsular. It is the tail end of Nak Dong River. We will work with artist run spaces in Busan.
Gosam Reservoir: is a scenic fishing village, most famously known because of its the background for Kim Ki Duk's film 'Island'. We will do workshops here because Total Museum of Contemporary Art is invested in this site as a potential spot for art festival in near future.
South Korea is a mountainous peninsular that has been transformed from a primarily agricultural industry to heavy industry and then to information technology industry over the past 60 years. Rivers have been the vital asset in all stages of urbanization and often times subject to exploit and abandonment. It is a symbolic metaphor as well as a practical example of human relationship to a natural resources. There are many large scale urban development projects happening at the moment in South Korea. We want to look into the ways in which development and industrialization affect natural environment and farming communities. Our host, Total Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul, has invited us to South Korea and is facilitating all practical aspects of the tour.
Eyebeam is an art and technology center in New York City that supports artists and creative technologist through residencies and fellowship. Eyebeam has produced amazing array of projects and communities, such as Graffiti Research Lab and many other experimental art+tech groups. Recently Eyebeam operates with research groups such as 'Sustainability Research Group' and 'Design for Social Change Research Group'. Eyebeam Roadshow is an artist initiative to bring Eyebeam's research and development environment on the road, and it went to various institutions and events in Chicago, Los Angeles, New Mexico and San Jose. The projects produced at Eyebeam are most often released as open source, sometimes through code and schematics and other times through workshop and exhibition.
