A new, artist driven mural at Fergies Pub, with artist Robert Goodman

The Project: I'm working on something new, an outgrowth of my work painting murals and I’m really excited. It’s called Freewall: The Artists’ Wall.

Freewall is a space for artists to extend their studio practice in a public, outdoor context and at an architectural scale. We affirm the value of individual vision and personal content in public art. We seek to support artists interested in engaging the public in a dialog with their work. Freewall features temporary wall painting installations at 1214 Sansom Street on the east side of Fergie’s Pub in Center City Philadelphia.

Philadelphia has a vibrant and successful community mural scene, one in which local residents and other stakeholders drive the process.

Freewall is different.

We want to create opportunities for artists to drive the process. Freewall is like a gallery, only on the side of a building.  We aim to provide artists with the space and the support to create the work most dear to their hearts, outside, for the entire city to enjoy.

We believe that the individual, unmediated artistic voice is a compelling and valuable voice, and that it has a place in the public landscape. Freewall operates with the conviction that we all benefit from the experience of an honest, unique vision.

We are raising money for our very first project, a great abstract mural by Robert Goodman. Robert is Chair of the Fine Arts Department at Moore College of Art and is represented by Seraphin Gallery in Philadelphia. See more about Robert and his work at www.robertrgoodman.com

Freewall does not pay artists or administrators. All funds raised will be used for paint, supplies such as buckets and drop-cloths, and a four-week lift rental so that Robert can work across this 24-foot-high wall.

Art is created out of the essential human desire for sincere expression and connection. Robert is painting this mural out of his desire to bring his work into the public space at a grand scale. We are supporting Robert because we believe in his work and want it to have a home outdoors, where everyone can experience it.

I hope you’ll support us in making this happen!
