Charron's Chatter: The Giggle Gazette. When news is too serious, & comedy too light, a mind-bending blend of word plays delights.
I'm Karen Robiscoe, a conventionally published author of fiction, poetry, op-eds and non-fiction, as well as the creator of Charron's Chatter Gazette. Charron's Chatter Gazette is a weekly publication I'm offering for free in cafes and coffeehouses in the Santa Barbara area. As noted in the video clips introducing my Kickstarter campaign, Charron's Chatter is a non-news, newspaper. A paper of puzzles—of wordplays & jokes, of non-sequiturs and trivia, of brainteasers, riddles, and soft news—if it makes you think a little, and smile a lot, it's in Charron's Chatter Gazette.
It's based on a website I created that has a bit broader scope. The website is a literary site I established about 2 years ago, and is the primary resource for my publication's articles and features. It has an outreach of 3600 followers, and growing every day, as well as over 1700 fb fans. Its popularity encouraged me to create a hard-copy version of the Chatter in hopes of broadening my readership and making my dream of becoming a professional writer into a reality.
I was able to send the first run of 500 to print, and I've already distributed those copies in 5 high-traffic cafes in town. I've dropped off literature to several more such outlets, and plan to approach other public service establishments around town—including hair salons, gyms, colleges and university, as well as local and international chains—to increase my paper's circulation, ultimately branching into professional circulation through vending machines as finances allow.
In the course of establishing a distribution route in SB county, I intend to sell ad space in the publication to local businesses to make the paper self-sustaining. I estimate it'll take me 4 months to achieve a self-sustaining paper, and until that time, I'll need help with the overhead and distribution costs. Basically print runs and gas money.
I thank you for your time to listen to this, and encourage you to visit my website, http://charronschatter.com to get a broader idea of the unique voice and vision I hope to bring to the world. Thank you and have an inspired day.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
(1) failing to attain enough advertising revenue to fund the print run and distribution costs. I plan to circumvent that by offering advertising space at a rate half that of my competition.
(2) failing to secure distribution outlets. I plan to circumvent that by sheer numbers and tenacity. For every 9 "no thanks" I will secure the 1 "sure, we'll try it" As borne out by my track record thus far. (for the 8 approached, I secured 5 outlets)
