Blight can be turned into urban farm space. This fall we will be expanding ours and starting a food stand in the Lower NInth Ward.
Between North Claiborne Avenue and Bayou Bienvenue in New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward, more than fifty percent of properties are without a standing structure. Levee breaches following Hurricane Katrina in 2005 washed most homes off their foundations completely, and rendered 100% of the remaining residential properties uninhabitable. This neighborhood has struggled in developing a strategy to deal with the nation’s highest percentage of blighted properties, at the same time dealing with their status as a modern "food desert". At Lamanche Urban Farm, we believe there is a way to turn this problem into an opportunity for the community.
One year ago, a group of volunteers met Miss Sula - a neighbor with a desire to see her vacant property turned into something that gave back to her community. We’ve invested time and money into growing Miss Sula's two lots into a fully functional farm, but at present the once-weekly local farmers’ market is the only place where residents can purchase fresh produce of any kind.
With a small investment, Lamanche can plant the rest of our garden space, make it fruitful, and in conjunction with other neighborhood growers, establish a produce stand that will serve the community throughout the week. Help us reach our goal of providing affordable, organic produce to a community underserved by vendors, markets, and purveyors. Help us prove that no American community need eat poorly.
