About this project

Just Food’s City Chicken Project provides the training, coops and hens that schools and community gardening groups need to raise healthy chickens and delicious eggs.

On May 20th, the City Chicken Committee - a team of Just Food staff and partners, chicken keepers and urban farmers - set out to visit six potential City Chicken Project partners.  We have applicants from Brooklyn, Harlem, Queens and the Bronx.  Our applicants are schools, community gardeners and urban farmers.  All of our applicants want to build chicken coops so that they can engage and bring their community together, offer educational opportunities, increase the health of their urban farms and gardens, and increase access to healthy food.

This project was started in partnership with Heifer International, but Heifer is no longer funding in NYC, so we need your help!  We need to raise $9,926 to provide training to our partners and build coops.

What your contribution provides:
$15 - 1 pullet or adult laying hen (most coops begin with a flock of around 12 chickens)
$50 - Supplies like a waterer or a feeder
$100 - 1 workshop on chicken health, care and maintenance
$1000 - A community build day with a volunteer supervisor and an expert coop-building carpenter (most coop-building projects require more than one build day, more than one person to supervise, and a tremendous outpouring of volunteer support )
$1500 - materials for one coop

The City Chicken Project would not be possible without the volunteer hours, donations large and small, and the vibrant energy and ideas of the communities we work with.

Just Food is a nonprofit organization that connects New York City communities and local and urban farmers with the resources and support they need to make fresh, locally grown food accessible to all.

  • The City Chicken Project launch party details revealed! Just Food and NYC Homebrewers Guild present KEGS & KLUCKERS (a NYC Good Beer Month Event)

WHEN: Wednesday, July 6, 2011; 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm
WHERE: BROOKLYN BREWERY 79 North 11th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11211

Kegs & Kluckers is a celebration for urban chicken keepers, aspiring urban chicken keepers, homebrewers, chickens, and the people who love them. This fun-filled event will include home-brewed beers, delicious local fare, Egg Olympic Games (at 8 o'cluck, yes we said "cluck") and appearances by NYC chickens.

This is a great chance for homebrewers (who generate a byproduct called spent grain) and chicken keepers (who can feed their chickens spent grain) to make connections to help create a more efficient and sustainable food system in NYC.

Kegs & Kluckers will raise money for Just Food's City Chicken Project. If you have made a pledge of $15 of more to this Kickstarter Campaign, your name will be on the list!

Thank you for your support and we hope to see you at this event!

About Just Food: Just Food is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that connects communities in all five New York City boroughs with fresh, locally grown food. Just Food provides regional farmers and food producers, CSA organizers and everyday eaters with the resources and support they need to establish and experience healthy food systems—in every neighborhood. Since 1995, Just Food has pioneered the sustainable food programs that support the growing numbers of CSAs, City Farms Markets and farm-to-food pantry programs we see today. Just Food serves thousands of New Yorkers by forging partnerships between local farms, food pantries, and community-run farmers markets and by providing urban communities with a framework for growing, and knowing, healthy food. Just Food is funded through a combination of individual donors, private foundations, and corporate and government contributions.
