A live absurdist performance of anti-conformity! 40 exuberant and autonomous bodies in PLAY. Poetic bursts of names, touch-tone phones

ABOUT SCORE FOR AN UNREHEARSED ENSEMBLE:

“Score for an Unrehearsed Ensemble” is an improvised, relational live-performance.  Simultaneous aesthetic diversity, 40 people, yes forty, in deep play on a main stage. Vanessa DeWolf directs the performance toward pervasive and subversive AUTONOMY of performers….advocating getting lost in absurd desires.  The aim is an exuberant composition of visual delight and a whiff of anarchy.  40 bodies in vibrancy, poets bursting with name games, oblique stories, death, melodrama, French & Barbara Streisand!

A live performative landscape of anti-conformity!

Your contribution to this project is a vote for INNOVATION!

Vanessa DeWolf will be writing a different “Score” for each performance, for the dress rehearsal, for any runs in the technical rehearsal and  additional scoreLABS that happen before the performance.  This means the performers, the designers, even Vanessa won’t know what we’re doing till a few hours before we are actually performing. This idea requires enormous BRAVERY & trust.  The 40 people in the ensemble and all the technical and design people have been imaginative and creatively available to meet these challenges with play, soul and tenderness. Gratitude permeates every element.

WHAT'S A SCORE? A score is a plan.  A score is a preparation.  A score is a map, a topography, a terrain.  A score is something to explore”         by Sarah Maxfield -----(http://unrehearsed-ensemble-cm-texts.tumblr.com/)

VANESSA'S RADICAL DEPARTURES IN IMPROVISATION TECHNIQUE:

  • What if listening were not the primary locus of the improvisation?
  • What if autonomy, and all the taboos of self-indulgence, ego, and getting lost in your own world, were encouraged as the center of this improvisation?
  • What’s “against agreement” in live-improvisation?

SCORE FOR AN UNREHEARSED ENSEMBLE is a radical concept in opposition to the usual tools and techniques of improvisation. A proposition of ANTI-COMPOSITION, after decades of profound compositional thinking.

RADICALIZE YOUR PLAY!

YOUR DOLLARS ARE A YES-YES-YES!

Your money will support the UNREHEARSED DESIGN TEAM....."Score for an Unrehearsed Ensemble" is fortunate to have a cracker-jack group of collaborators, designers and support people, all making this unpredictable project run.  It takes a spedial kind of person in these roles to pull off improvisational work, and these folks got it a-plenty:
  • 2 COSTUME DESIGNERS:  Annie Terrell & Rachel Ravitch coordinate the making  of 40 paper dresses & 40 sets of vibrant cuffs and collars & more
  • 1 LIGHTING & TECH DESIGNER:  David Verkade, is ready to improvise & play with these vital technical elements in live-performance.
  • 2 STAGE MANAGERS:Devon Sasaki & Logan Bruch are willing to be seen despite the typical “invisibility” of their roles.
  • 1 PRODUCTION MANAGER:  Olivia Taguinod has been immeasurably essential.  A 40 person ensemble would be impossible without her.
  • 1 VISUAL DESIGNER:Syniva Whitney, along with making some fabulous latex objects for the project, will be sustaining the visual style vibrant
  • 1 SOUND OPERATOR:Shannon Stewart will bravely step on stage to press play at some highly unexpected times, because, yes, she is improvising.
  • 1 DRAMATURG:  A K Mimi Allin has also proven to be fantastically important, documenting in language the process and keeping track of all the scores.  This project requires this role to run and we are so lucky to have her.

EVERY DOLLAR BRINGS THIS WORK TO LIFE!

ABOUT VANESSA DEWOLF: She works in experimental and improvised performance.  For nearly two decades her work has navigated interdisciplinary territories between language, the body and sensation.  She values awkwardness, absurdity, and play.  As an artist, she has had the fortune to study with a wide-range of amazing teachers from Simone Forti to Deborah Hay and on to the amazing local artists in Seattle including Tonya Lockyer, Sheri Cohen, Maureen Whiting, Kris Wheeler and Stephanie Skura and so many more.  Vanessa is also an artist advocate.  She is well regarded as a feedback consultant and nourisher of artist’s out on various limbs in their practices.  Additionally Vanessa runs two artist support spaces: Studio Current and PROJECT: Space Available.  Studio Current offers a space to body-based artists in their creative process.  The mission at Studio Current is to provide rehearsal/practice space for 12-16 artists and flip upside-down the usual exchange of space for money into an exchange of artistic dialog & creative development while in the midst of their works-in-progress.  At Studio Current we fight artistic isolation through community discussions, sharing of work and more.  Many artists have found life-long creative collaborators at the studio.  PROJECT: Space Available is a performance-installation artist residency, that Vanessa co-curates with Mônica Mata Gilliam.  We created this residency to encourage responsiveness to the space where the work actually occurs.  We offer 6-8 artists two intensive months of residency in a studio that is entirely the artist’s without the pressure to “produce.”  At PROJECT: Space Available the process is valued over the outcome which encourages discovery.  Artists from many disciplines have been in residence, from a textile artist to choreographers, each deeply site-specifically in process.
