3 days from Performance, the kickstarter completed

Update #3 · Jun 13, 2012 · comment

Again thank you so much for contributing to this project.  The kickstarter completed this morning about 8am and I couldn't be more thrilled, more bolstered, more encouraged, THANK YOU.  And it's more then just the $3582 (!) that was raised, it's the support that all 89 of you mean to experimental performance.  The ensemble has met this crazy autonomous work with such profound creativity, heart, soul and adventurousness it feels so so important that you, supporters, have also met this work in that manner too.

OKAY SO PERFORMANCE IN 3 DAYS!!!! Tomorrow we have our tech rehearsal, where the lights and the sound and the space will all be designed, activated, and prepared for the unknown material of the scores.  David Verkade is such a creative expert, I've been working with him for close to two decades and again and again it's confirmed what free, creative, ingenious artist he is.  I can't wait to engage with him tomorrow in this process.  Of course the amazing support team:  Olivia Taguinod, Devon Sasaki, Logan Bruch, Syniva Whitney, Kris Wheeler, AK Mimi Allin, Shannon Stewart and the amazing ensemble and poets too are all vibrating with the energy of starting.

Another Update really soon, after the Tech Rehearsal.....

We reached our goal AND here come the performances......

Update #2 · Jun 7, 2012 · comment

Thank You so much for contributing to this project.  It has been amazing learning journey toward this performance.  So very many wonderful people have been involved and grown this work to this point.  I can honestly say I am (and this is rare) a week from performance not in a panicky or disturbed state.  I'm delighted.  I'm full of anticipation like a delicious cream in the middle of a decadent cake.  I'm not sure how many of you backers can actually make the performances (June 16 & 17 at On the Boards in Seattle, www.ontheboards.org) but I can't wait for you to see it all simultaneously unfold in autonomous mayhem of fabulously absurdist heights.  Some of you will hear your name over and over in the poetry of the performance.

We have just a few last dates to make this all come together and then we are all ready.

Lately I've been thinking about "hollow space" like the middle of the chocolate bunny.  An unexpected but grateful space that is empty and yet full of potential.  I realized in the last few days of writing and thinking about the "scores" that I'm aiming for this.  It's very unusual state for me to be in....I'm not a minimalist.  I don't usually cut and shave down to the essential, if anything I would consider myself a "maximalist" and my work is usually full of density.  It has been a delight to remind myself this lightness, this hollowness, is exactly why the performers are so full.  I've made a space.  That's what I'm doing making a space, but it's surrounded I hope by sweetness like chocolate.  I thought the center of this piece was an idea I've been calling "against agreement" and that has been my conceptual guiding light....BUT....it isn't the central idea.  It's about a space and room for meeting and yes, relationships, but in the context of autonomous creativity.  And it is because of this that hope is the rising feeling.  We thirst for this kind of permission, this chance to be not merely 60% of our creative expressiveness, but to meet at all 100% of our expression.  I can't tell you how this feels to witness to encourage to develop....yes this is what I'm meant to do.

The next update will be from within the performance.  Can't wait to share with you.

love

Vanessa DeWolf

PAPER COSTUMES are such a hit!!!

Update #1 · May 22, 2012 · 1 comment

Thank You for all your support to make this project fly, thrive and vibrate!

This feels like an excellent moment for an update, because we know all 42 performers now and we've completed almost half of the paper costumes.  As you know from my video and from all the language I put on the main-page, that this is a project that is all about AUTONOMY this is even true in the costuming.  Each participant received paper and gaffers tape and Annie Terrell (costume designer) and Rachel Ravitch (costume designer) and Vanessa DeWolf (maker-of-paper-dresses) helped participants navigate their ideas, including favorite movements of their body...AND WOW!!! The costumes are extraordinary, just another reminder how profoundly creative we human beings are with the slightest suggestion.  Below is a short video of JOYCE LIAO trying out her new costume:
