Tradition and innovation collide in a new stage performance born from international collaboration between Maple and Offspring Morris.
Wow! Thanks for helping us reach our initial $4,000 goal! We are overjoyed by your generous support and feel very lucky to have such a great community backing our project.
For those of you just joining us now, fear not, you haven't missed your chance to contribute.
Given the enthusiasm shown so far, we've decided to reach for a new STRETCH GOAL of $7,500.
The more we money raise on Kickstarter, the bigger and better our show will be! Possible uses for additional funding include:
- Top-notch performing spaces in Boston and Toronto
- More elaborate scenery, costumes, lights, and sound
- Professional videography and photography of the full project process
- Financial assistance for travel between Boston and Toronto (extremely helpful for the young Morris dancers from the UK already investing a lot to come here!)
- Group housing in Toronto
NEW REWARD: Best of all, if we're successful in reaching our new goal, we will offer an additional reward for all backers giving $25 or more: an invitation to an all-day Morris workshop, hosted by Maple, in the Boston area, within one year of the project completion date. We'll spend the day exploring the nooks and crannies of Morris to discover the potential for new dance creations within our traditions. The workshop will be followed by a rollicking pub party, 'cause there ain't no party like a Maple party!
Maple Morris is a community of young dancers from across North America who are dedicated to promoting creativity, leadership, and continued excellence in the second generation of the N. American Morris revival.
Morris Offspring, led by Laurel Swift, is a group of outstanding young Morris dancers from the UK who stage shows and other events based on Morris dancing. With deep respect for the roots from which Morris came, Morris Offspring is a continuation of this evolving tradition.
What is Morris Dancing?
Morris is a surviving English traditional folk dance that has been performed since the 1400s and has been associated with seasonal and harvest rituals. The dance is vigorous and athletic and the high leaps are accented by the use of white handkerchiefs and bells.
In the words of Laurel Swift, director of Morris Offspring, "Morris is a complex and energetic art form demanding athleticism, coordination, and musicality from its performers, who are expected to display both discipline and individuality at any moment. It is rich in material, forms and movement, rarely tapped by the wider arts world yet offering a unique source of artistic possibilities." Through the Exchange Project, Maple Morris and Morris Offspring have begun to deeply explore this rich cultural resource.
What is the Exchange Project?
Last year, Maple took on an exciting and ambitious project, when we traveled to the UK for a collaboration with England's foremost innovators, Morris Offspring. Through a week of workshops and rehearsals, Maple Morris and Morris Offspring produced Must Come Down, a stage performance showcasing Morris dancing at its most inventive.
A return leg of the collaboration in 2013 will see Maple Morris joined by Morris Offspring for two weeks of workshops and performances of a brand new stage production in Boston and Toronto (tentatively scheduled for sometime during the week of July 14-20, 2013). We will be joined by a set of exciting musicians (TBA) and writing collaborator Susan Cooper. Blending traditional and original content, our performance will tell the tale of Morris as a North American tradition, exploring its place in this context through interactions with music, song, dance, character, and story.
We need your help to make this possible!
Putting on a show of this caliber is expensive; hiring musical talent, venue rental, scenery, lighting, costumes...it adds up quickly! Furthermore, many of our dancers are students and recent graduates who will be unable to participate in the Exchange project without financial support. Our $4000 goal will get us started and cover many of our initial costs, but the more money we have in the bank before next summer the bigger and better our show can be! That's why we're turning to you for help in making this project a reality. Please join us in what will be our best and most ambitious project yet by donating to our Kickstarter campaign!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
This sort of collaboration between two dance teams, and a group of hired musicians, can prove both challenging and exhilarating. We have lofty goals for the material we will learn and create in a short, intense time period. Maple and Offspring learned a great deal about working, playing, and creating together during the first leg of our exchange in 2011. We are now more familiar with the differences in leadership styles, the pacing of a day when learning new material, and the importance of taking time to relax. Most of all, we remember the joyful process of building a show and a shared community together. The work of creating new material and planning our show has already begun. We look forward to continuing our collaboration next summer, and we believe that our preparation, previous experience, and building excitement will help us to make a fantastic performance for all of you!
