'Hogswallop Tales' is a graphic novel of interrelated stories inspired by Faerie lore and the Pagan traditions of ancient Europe.
Who Am I?
My name is Maxwell Mudd, and I have been drawing and telling stories for as long as I can remember. For years I've been working in positions at which I'm technically adept(but not passionate about), simply to keep food in our mouths and rent in the landlord's pocket. Finally, late last year, I was given an extended period of time to think about my life(laid off), and I achieved a clarity of purpose. I realized that telling a great story feeds my soul like nothing else can. Writing and painting are not work, they are life. I have found my true calling, and now I must follow.
What's This Project All About?
'Hogswallop Tales' is a graphic novel of faerie tales that I have been developing over the past year. The book follows the adventures of Mrs. Hogswallop(a woman with a pig's head), and the children that have befriended her, through a series of six short stories. Without spoiling any of the mystery with specifics, I will say that this book is about magic and the faerie world, and is inspired by some of the deep mythological cycles of early European religions.
The stories in 'Hogswallop Tales' take place in a rural community during a time period resembling the mid nineteenth century. The environments represented in the book pay homage to the magic that is already present in nature.
All of the artwork in the book is being done on 11" x 17" Bristol board at standard comic book ratios. The pages start with a pencil drawing, and then portions of the drawing are inked using Burnt Umber ink and a crow quill pen. After the pages are inked, they are painted in watercolors. It is a labor intensive process, and one mistake can require the whole page to be scrapped, but I love it! And the results are well worth the effort.
So, How Far Along Is It?
As of the time that these words(<-- right here) are being written, all the writing is done, and three pages of artwork have been completed. It takes about four days(on average) me to complete a page of artwork.
Since I am self publishing 'Hogswallop Tales', funding this project through Kickstarter will help me secure the money needed to bring this book to print and cover the other costs associated with self-publishing. Also, a successful Kickstarter project will ensure that a significant number of the books that I'm producing will be going directly to the people that want them.
How Will The Funds Be Used?
The funds from this campaign will be used primarily for fulfilling the rewards to backers. The remaining funds will be used to pay for the business costs associated with self publishing, such as professional scanning, and ISBN numbers. Any extra funds(would be awesome) will go toward producing additional prints of the book, and a bonus reward for all backers.
Thank you for reading about the 'Hogswallop Tales' project. I deeply appreciate your time and consideration, even if you ultimately decide not to back the project. When all is said and done, it will be through the support of the Kickstarter community that 'Hogswallop Tales' will make it to print.
In recognition of the important role that you, the backers of this project, play in bringing this book to print, I will be including a 'Special Thanks' section in the final book that will include the names of ALL Kickstarter backers.
A Special Preview! (Update)
I have been hesitant to release any details about the stories in the book because so much of the joy of reading these stories is the joy of discovery. But I thought that it won't ruin the experience too much if I show you what to expect from the first two pages(they were meant as an introduction anyway). So, I've put together mockups of the first two pages. I use the term "mockup" because the pages are photographs, not the final scans. And the lettering will be different in the final book. That being said, please enjoy this preview!
A Note On The Name 'Maxwell Mudd':
My legal name is Will Thomas. 'Maxwell Mudd' is a pseudonym that I use when producing creative works because it is memorable and unique in my field. This uniqueness helps increase the visibility of my work.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
There are only two risks that I can think of that would affect you, as a backer of this project. The first risk would be a possible delay in fulfillment due to unforeseen business complications. And the second risk is that there is a slight chance(since you haven't read it yet) that you would dislike the story in some way. But, in that case, you could always give it as a gift!
The challenges that I face in completing this project are mostly associated with the fact that I am the sole creative talent and business administrator for this venture. But I know that, with proper time management, I can complete all the business and artistic requirements of this project.
