Well, here I am, twiddling away at the keyboard again. I am in my last year of PhD classes, and as such, I'm juggling school, work, writing, and a crazy family life once more.
I am working on nailing down a time to chat with our animator, Zee- we are on other sides of the country, and seem to never be awake at coinciding hours, so recording creator commentary has been more of a challenge than I ever could have anticipated! Needless to say, this represents yet another instance of "the best laid plans".
Still, I have scripts and questions ready, and once those recordings are done, the DVD copies will be set, and I will be able to ship out the rest of the maps.
For those waiting on book copies, I have more news: I am doing some intensive redrafting on the whiteboard (photos will be included in the next update, as soon as I can get the cat pawprints cleaned up). While the redrafting timeline is still a little unsteady, I am aiming to be ready for beta readers by the end of Summer 2014- including you.
In addition, I am in the process of saving funds to pay for construction of a website for Fall 2014. We have a very talented graphic designer on the project, and with any luck, we should be in a good place for release of a clean, tight site. This site will 1) offer a summary of the book, 2) present the teaser trailer, 3) offer an author bio, 4) link to my other writing in the fantasy industry, 5) offer a prologue sample chapter of the book, and 6) (may) host a blog.
Ultimately, I see this site as serving two functions: first, to pitch Firedust to potential publishers while I mail out queries, and second, to serve as a basis for building a fan base.
I will be the first to admit that in this project, I had no idea of the amount of time a film would take to produce, and was unaware of just how long post-production would take when the actors, animator, and writer are not only in different timezones, but at times on different continents. This entire process was a shocking, difficult exercise in what can go wrong, and why it is important to build flexibility into production schedules.
I also discovered, along the way, that pursuing a major creative endeavor while completing a PhD is an exercise in insanity. Combine this with several medical crises and you have the formula for the slow and at times painful progress of this project.
Throughout everything, though, you have all been remarkably patient and unceasingly generous. I would like to direct particular thanks to Michael Frederick, who continues to be an inspiration, a motivation, and a reminder of what trust and friendship can mean.
I think of all of you every day, and can't wait to see this project to the finish line. I truly believe that this trailer, combined with the website, will put Firedust in a good position to compete in a cutthroat industry.
Tegan, and the rest of the Firedust team
Hello everyone- I know I am about 4.5 hours after my deadline of May- but here is a first peek (for those of you planning to use Kickstarter, please note that there are very, very strange limits on media on here, so compression was the only option- this will not be the case in the DVD copies!)
Thank you all for your patience- the last year has been a very hard one. Between parental medical crises, deaths, and about 15 schedule changes due to just about every problem one could imagine in project management, this has been a long time coming. You have all been patient, kind, compassionate, and helpful throughout.
The final surveys will be coming in June, with another month to reply.
Hello everyone! So here we are, about a year out from our original funding requests. We have had some changes- including the tragic loss of our lead actress last summer, a change from a live action to an animated format, the hospitalization of my mother (and subsequent recovery), our animator's sudden (and very much welcome) deluge of contracts in December which lead to Firedust taking a backseat, finding voice actors all the way from South Africa (which lead to lots of transatlantic mail), a pretty terrible back injury, fiddling with soundtrack, fighting with the audio provider to get access to the song, and the chaos of my PhD program. Needless to say, it's been a heartbreaking, uplifting, hectic year.
Through everything- the funeral, the hospitals, the announcements of format changes, the promotions, and the long bouts of radio silence as we worked at this project, you placed your full faith in me and in our animator, Zee Bashew. That has meant the world to both of us as we fight through life's ups and downs to finish this and do it right.
We are now left in post-production. Zee has all the animation work done, is essentially done with the coloring, and is now left with the task of fine-tuning the voice synching, cleaning up the soundtrack, and generally buffing this gem til it glows.
Next, in April, I will send out our first package- a semi-complete gem which actually made me stand up and cheer the first time I saw it (I am still trying to figure out how to attach video files on here, and kickstarter has stubbornly refused- so in light of this delightful, and at this point rather predictable technical problem, I will upload onto the Firedust facebook page).
Our goal is to have this project completed by the end of May. We appreciate all of your patience, passion, and interest. We are working hard, and we can't wait to send each of you a finished project. Through all of the sadness, the joy, the chaos, and the normal challenges of life, you have been wonderful supporters. We will never forget it.
With the semester over and some major project setbacks fully resolved (including voice actor changes, storyboarding shifts, and the normal chaos of life), I am pleased to report that we are in the process of wrapping up work on Firedust. We will be sending out copies of the DVD, maps, an interview from the animator and myself, and for a few of our key top-tier donors, a signed Teeshirt and a copy of the revised novel in January.
I have loved every step of this process, and appreciate your patience in the past 9 months, through some difficult losses, some major project shifts, and artistic transitions. You have made something wonderful possible, and each of you will forever be in my heart as I continue to tell this story.
Hello everyone! We are moving along smoothly, with Zee working on the animation. We expect production to be done in October, roughly. As many of you may have noticed, individuals at the $10 level received surveys in May recording their contact information, which lead to them receiving their maps. For those of you donating at the $25-$100 level, surveys will go out in October to collect your contact information to send you a map, and the DVD, in later October/ November. For those donating at the highest levels, we will send a survey in December, and prepare teeshirts, maps, and the DVD- with the book coming (depending on Lulu's printing process, shipping period, and the good grace of my Editor), the book will come in January.
I can't thank each and every one of you enough for helping to make this trailer a reality! Take care, and have a safe and productive fall!
