I’m Mike Landa and I want to make a bale of straw fly.

With the help of Kickstarter, I will create a temporary piece of sculpture that makes a bale of straw flip and bounce down a field. This piece is inspired by stop motion animation and the time lapse photography of Eadweard Muybridge. My piece differs in that it will be composed of 24 actual straw bales. Each bale held in place by a steel frame. Each bale frozen in time. Each bale representing one frame or one still image from one second of film. (Because most films are shot at 24 frames per second.) The final piece will be about 200 feet long with the top of the highest bouncing bale at about 7 feet. So pretty big.

About the sculpture site

Peaceful Belly has been kind enough to provide a space for this sculpture on their farm, a strip of land about 10 feet wide and 200 feet long. Peaceful Belly is a great asset to the City of Boise, providing delicious organic veggies and limitless energy promoting organic farming, affordable fresh food and healthy lifestyles. Come fall when it’s time to put the farm to bed for the winter, I will deconstruct the piece with 99% of the materials being re-purposed on the farm. The straw will be used as mulch and the steel posts will become next year’s tomato trellising. Any miscellaneous parts will be recycled. The plan is for zero waste.

This Kickstarter wilI help pay for the materials and related costs involved with constructing this project including ongoing maintenance for the life of the sculpture.
