"Forms of Things Unknown" is a twelve movement piece composed by Dave Morgan commissioned by the Youngstown Percussion Collective.
Hello! We are the Youngstown Percussion Collective from Youngstown Ohio. As a non-profit student organization, our goal is to advance the percussive arts through, performance, composition, commissions, educational outreach, research, and fundraising.
Our latest project is a piece we commissioned from Dave Morgan called the "Forms of Things Unknown". We will be recording this piece in January 2012. The process will include the recording, mixing, mastering and duplication of a full length CD.
YPC has been working hard to raise funds for this project, through bake sales and school outreach performances. But we need your support to bring this project all the way home!
Here is our timeline for the project:
-Recording and mixing January 9th through the 13th, 2012
-Artwork to be done by YSU art student
-Master the CD in late January to early February
-CD sent for duplication (Disc Masters) in February
-Release of CD in early spring 2012
With your pledge, we will complete what has been a two year process. This process included: tons of meetings, countless rehearsals, lots of baking, the world premiere of the piece on November 2nd in Youngstown and the final preparation for the recording.
YPC would like to share this music with as many people as possible. The music has taken us on a great journey and through its gorgeous melodies, world rhythms, interesting time signatures, and use of found instruments we think you are going to love this CD!
Here is a little more about the music. It is a
twelve movement piece written for fifteen percussionists. The piece draws on influences from
around the globe including Brazilian, African, and the Middle East while also
including a melodic and harmonic vocabulary based on our own American Jazz
traditions. There are over 200
percussion instruments used in the piece. Ranging from the traditional like; marimbas,
vibraphones and glockenspiels to all kinds of hand drums played from around the
world.
Glenn Schaft, YSU director of Percussion Studies and our adviser says, “This project provides our students the rare opportunity to participate in an entire artistic creation project from its very conception, through planning, fundraising, performance, recording a compact disc, mixing and mastering the recording, and distributing the music worldwide, all the while working on a daily basis in meetings and rehearsals with a world-class composer in David Morgan."
Thank you for your time and consideration of our project!
