Batteries included!
We would like to inform our backers and those who are watching us that the Torch T1 and Midnight edition will now come with rechargeable batteries included. The batteries will be integrated into the helmet and will charge using a USB cable allowing you to charge your helmet while at work or on the road without an external charger.
We have found a supplier who can provide our battery needs at an affordable price for our initial order of 1000 helmets. We will be working with our engineering consultant to choose the safest and best battery type and will keep you updated as this progresses.
Thank you all for your questions and comments. Keep them coming!

Sorry, didn't see the post the previous post. Disregard. Thanks!

I love that you've decided to go with rechargeable batteries, however when the batteries are no longer able to take a charge will the battery be easily replaceable?
Creator Bob Anderton on May 8, 2012
This is great. I was a little worried about the batteries. This helmet will be perfect for Seattle's long dark winters...
Creator Ian Kwan on May 8, 2012
Ah thanks. I thought you meant your helmets will now include a free CR2 battery, with built-in charger! ;) I suppose free is better than "not free". ;)

Dani and Jonah,
the batteries will be set behind the rear lens and secured to the EPS foam. They will be replaceable if needed and we will offer the correct replacement available on our website once it is up and running.
As far as user friendly, it depends on the user :)
The way it currently works is that two tabs accessed from inside the helmet release the lens. Once the lens is off, it will be a simple unplug and remove, then plug in and place new battery in pocket. It should be pretty simple and we are working hard to make sure that everything about our products remain that way in the future as well.
Thanks guys.

Question, how does one replace batteries in the midnight edition if the original batteries get battery memory. My concern is that should the original batteries get battery memory its a plain old helmet with non-working lights. (in my experience battery memory sets in after 5 years). If there is a way to replace batteries in the midnight edition I'll interested I upgrading my support.
Creator Dani Estrela on May 7, 2012
I like the built-in batteries, but being not removable how does it work when it comes to replace it for new ones? Will it be user-friendly?
Creator Nathan Wills on May 7, 2012
Hi Ian,
you may have missed my point with the update. We will not be using Cr2 any longer. Instead the helmet will come with batteries already built into the helmet that will not be removable. You will simply have to plug your included USB cable into the helmet to charge it. This saves each backer the cost of batteries and the charger.
I hope you agree that this is a benefit,
Nathan

I don't know about the others, but personally, I'd rather see a helmet powered by 1 or 2 AAA batteries than a CR2. There are more AAA options (e.g. Sanyo, Duracell, Rayovac, Energizer, etc...), there are more GOOD batteries on the market (e.g. Sanyo Eneloop AAA), and there are more "smart" chargers that only charge the batteries with the required amount of charge (rather than just a built-in timer), and without requiring batteries be charged in pairs. It's better for the environment because batteries last longer, and hold more charge for a longer period of time (i.e. over 12 months).
But do what's best for the majority. ;) There are reasons to choose AAA, but perhaps there are engineering/design issues for choosing CR2 that I'm not thinking of.

Ah, that really ups the Wow Factor for this great product. It sure looks like we are going to get the last few supporters this week - woohoo!
Creator Kevin Thai on May 6, 2012
That's wonderful news! And we're getting so much closer to the goal. I'm excited.
Creator Dan Amrich on May 6, 2012
That's great news and a huge convenience!
