It was a dark and stormy night...

Update #12 · May 1, 2012 · 10 comments

A time lapse from last night (kinda dark & moody).

It was a dark and stormy night in Boring, Oregon (yes, it really is called Boring!). So I boldly scampered up on the roof and gingerly inched my way over to the chimneys. There I stood... gazing resolutely at the scene before me, deeply moved by the sublime beauty.

Tempting fate I stood on tiptoe to place my iPhone 4s on the edge of the chimney.  But, fear not!, my beloved phone was nestled in the SlingShot so t'was safe and secure from all alarm.  Thankfully, Siri was asleep so no cry was heard.

I set up and started shooting a time lapse of the brooding clouds scudding overhead. Suddenly I heard a howl and the scrabble of claws on the roof! I whipped around and...

Well, not really... that was just my dog barking and whining at the gate down below for me to feed her.

Anyway, here's the time lapse video (plus a bonus shot of the SlingShot perched on my chimney!)

And, here's the bonus shot:

So, that's my big adventure last night.  Was I scared? Well, not much...

Cheers!

Charles

      Ed,
Yes, us Bores are trying madly to stay awake so we can meet our Dullard sistern.

The app is called 'Time Lapse Camera HD' - it's handy-dandy.

The HDR is NOT HDR, it's from my Nikon D700 which has wonderful low-light capabilities, and with the addition of tweaks in Lightroom (which I LOVE!) it was made ultra-cool.

Hi Charles, great video! What app did you use for the time lapse? (That (presumably) HDR still photo looks great, too!)

And I'm sure you've heard by now, but Boring is starting a "sister community" relationship with Dull, Scotland. :-D

      Michael,
The Waterfall video that's on the project page was done with FilmicPro, which also allows me to lock down the auto-exposure, white balance, and focus. I like it a lot. And, I'll get some others up very soon!

      Cheers!

      Niels,
I used 'Time Lapse Camera HD' because it lets me turn off auto-exposure and auto-white-balance. If those are on, the color and exposure will shift suddenly during the video and it looks terrible.

      Kevin,
No hooks, velcro, or stick-um pads! It looks really shocking, but it's actually siting on a level spot, though the legs and handle are right at the edges... yipes! Thankfully there was no strong wind or wild wolves leaping around.

      Stephen,
Thanks for the nice words - and I should point out that the still was NOT shot with a phone, it was my Nikon D700 with a touch of fill-flash to pull up the foreground.

It looks great, Charles. I'm looking forward to my two Slingshots... My phone has a fantastic camera including video, so now I will start looking for good time lapse apps. Keep up the great work.

What app did you use for the time lapse?

It seems pretty stable. Do the legs have grips or something on them?
