RACETRACK is a museum installation piece about equine racing, filmed at Golden Gate Fields, using slow motion cameras.
RACETRACK is about Golden Gate fields, a racetrack for thoroughbred racing in northern California. The film highlights the training, maintaining and racing of thoroughbred horses. Everyday occurrences are shown: in the backstretch - the grooming, feeding, shoeing and caring for horses and the preparation for races; at the practice track the various aspects of training, exercising and timing the horses; at the paddock the pre-race presentation of the horses; and in the grandstand - betting and watching the races. With stunning cinematography by Charlie Weston, the film has sequences of slow motion using the RED camera, courtesy of John Chader at Chader Camera, with 300 frames-per-second footage of horses being washed and groomed and racing footage when you see the legs and dirt flying as the horses are on the track.
This is a museum installation piece and meant to be shown in a large space in the form of a large grid that opens on 9 frames of everything that happens at the racetrack in the early morning and then changes to the racing days where all aspects of the racing world are covered. Imagine a large screen, filled to the brim with activity, moving and flowing to create a fantastic visual spectacle. The frames will be changing with the rhythm of music and movement, switching between a 9 grid display of activity and fullscreen shots in beautiful, 300 frames per second slow motion. The film is meant to show the industry of horse racing but serves as a rich microcosm about rituals and industry, exploring the nature of activities that seem to compose the human condition.
Making a film is expensive! While we have done all the shooting, we still require funds for the numerous tools and services required. These include hiring audio professionals for the soundtrack editing, as well as post-production costs to get the project out there for you to see!
