Synchronously control four DC motors at the same time with only three pins on Arduino. The design has a 3 or 4 wire SPI slave port

I have been teaching electronics and robotics in college for eight years. I always found that there is a need for quad DC motor control board. There are many dual motor control boards on the markets now. But they lack a synchronous interface, like SPI. They consume too many GPIOs. Most of them are too limited in either current or voltage.
I would like to produce a quad DC motor control board that can,
Has a synchronous interface, like SPI slave, 5 V digital interface
Use only 3 pins
Can operate all four DC motors at the same time
1 A peak current and 0.5 A DC current per DC motor
Can work up to 30 V battery
Control board is 3.8 inch by 2.5 inch
Inexpensive and easy to replace components. I like to use through hole components
Arduino compatible but not limited to Arduino
My initial design is not a shield yet. I would like to make it a shield.
I have put the design on breadboards already as proof of concept
