Hello fans!
Right after we left Roswell, Georgia from my Aunt Cam’s house, we
were pulled over once again due to “expired registration” on our camper
van. Luckily the cop let us go because there was nothing we could do
about it. Brodie and me were so concerned we were going to get a ticket
that we were full adrenaline most of the way to Richmond, Virginia (an
eight hour drive).
Considering it was a long drive from Roswell to Richmond, I wasn’t
going to have the opportunity to watch the Kings game that was on at 3pm
Eastern time, but luckily Mark had NBCSN on his phone, which allowed me
to watch the game. Unfortunately, they lost 2-0 on their home ice.
We arrived in Virginia about five till 6, and were just in time for
Joe Enroughty and His Royal Virginians at The Midway. Upon leaving the
gig, we spoke with Charles Newton (one of the trombone players), who
recommended we stop and see his band the following night during their
rehearsal.
In the morning, I gave Mr. Newton a call, and he told us to come by
at 7:30pm to see Johnny Peyton & the Renaissance Band. They were
fantastic, and definitely played with a “Count Basie beat.” The crew and
I enjoyed interviewing Charles and a couple other of the guys after the
rehearsal as they shared with us how much the Johnny Peyton Band and
music has influenced their lives. There are some truly nice people in
that band, and we were grateful we got a chance to see them.
The next day (5/22/12), we left Richmond fairly early and drove the
van two and a half hours to Huntington, Maryland to meet with Doc and
Chou Chou Scantlin, right next to the Chesapeake Bay. To say they gave
us some great hospitality would be an understatement! The made us
homemade coffee, Pho, pie, as well as discussing so much of their lives
with us that we were able to get a lot of solid footage at the
Scantlin’s.
Before heading to Baltimore, we stopped at Chesapeake Beach, which
was really relaxing. We took a few photos and got back in the van and
drove about and hour and a half to Baltimore where we checked into the
La Qunita Inn on Philadelphia Road, which my grandpa reserved two rooms
for us. Later that night, we all watched the Los Angeles Kings beat the
Phoenix Coyotes in overtime to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals for the
first time since 1993. I was so stoked I couldn’t believe it was real,
therefore Brodie and I really really want to go to a game in either New
York or New Jersey for the finals.
When we woke up, we drove over to my grandpa’s brother, Gorman’s
house for some breakfast. He and his wife Rhea made us some eggs,
bagels, and scrapple–we were stuffed! After the meal we drove through
downtown, and got lost several times before making it to Federal Hill
for a cinematic view. We didn’t spend much time there however because
our Producer, Ashim had to catch a flight back to California for family
matters. Sadly, we dropped him off at BWI and tried to convince him to
stay, but he wouldn’t budge.
Since our interview with Dan Deacon fell through, we had the rest of
the day to kill, and we ended up going to a Baltimore Orioles games
where we spent the afternoon in the boiling sun. The three of us really
enjoyed Camden Yards.
Sincerely,
Anthony Sabatino
