The Problem

Ladies, there is nothing more frustrating than losing your cell phone or purse. Since the majority of women’s clothes do not have pockets, you have to lug around a purse, clutch, or handbag all night. Not only do purses and such restrict your hands, but they can be easily misplaced while socializing. As Cyndi Lauper so eloquently put it, “When the workin’ day is done, girls just wanna have fun.”  How can you get your groove on when you’re stuck babysitting your purse the entire night?

Relying on the traditional accessories (purses, handbags, clutches) to carry your valuables (cell phone, credit cards, cash, keys, ID, etc) in is also risky. By using these accessories, you are potentially:

• Losing money
• Exposed to theft

Cross-bodies and handbags: Since these accessories are out in the open and can be seen from far away, they can potentially make you a target for theft. Cell phones cost a couple hundred dollars and are the most valuable item women carry on them everyday. 

Purses and clutches: Restrict your hands and have to be constantly kept track of.  Since they are detached from you, they can easily be snatched away.

Inspired by the way a Joey (baby kangaroo) nestles in its mother's pouch, the Joey is designed to attach all of a girl's valuables to her body, including a cell phone, keys, credit cards, cash, and I.D. The Joey is a slim pouch with a clip at the top that can attach to any necklace of your choice! My Journey

I first came up with the idea for the product over a year ago, while I was a senior in college.  After losing her iphone a couple times, my friend Mallory would persuade me to carry her valuables (cell phone, keys, credit card, ID, cash) in my pockets when we went out to party.  Sure, it was emasculating pulling out lip gloss on cue, but it was better than scouring the town for her phone and such the next day.  I soon realized that the problem wasn’t isolated and actually was a widespread issue that many girls experienced when they went out. I began to notice how aggravating it is for girls to rely on the traditional options (purses, handbags, clutches) to carry their valuables in.  These accessories are a pain to carry and can be easily misplaced while socializing and moving around. Due to this inconvenience, many girls would have to back track the next day and search through the aftermath of the party to find their valuables.

After graduating from college in May 2011, like many recent grads, I struggled to find a career job.  I always had the dream of becoming an entrepreneur and decided that it was the most opportune time to develop the Joey idea.  Having majored in advertising, I figured the experience creating this product could help me get an entry level job in the field. 

As soon as I started, I became very passionate about creating this product that I believe can save women from a lot of unnecessary expenses and make their life easier.  I have become so consumed with developing this product line that I have lived and breathed it since I first came up with the idea.

Product Development

For over a year, I have been designing and developing this transcendent accessory line. Traveling from New York City to Los Angeles, I have received guidance from a couple fashion designers and consultants to help me create my vision.  During the design process, our top priorities have been: functionality and quality.  We believe that we have created the most convenient and utilitarian accessory for women to trust with keeping their valuables safe.  The Joey is intended to serve one purpose: to make the user's life easier. 

Our commitment to creating a top of the line product led us to construct each Joey out of designer quality Italian leather.  More than just the inspiration for the product, my friend Mallory has put her tremendous "eye for aesthetics" to good use.  She has instilled her fashionista sensibility into the aesthetics and overall look of the Joey.  With her help, the Joey has turned out to be a sleek and sexy accessory that can be a perfect complement to any outfit!

After many rounds of samples, the Joeys have reached the final prototype stage.  The final prototypes have met our high aesthetic demands and look even more marvelous in person!  The dimensions are set and the materials and hardware have all been finalized.

All of the Joeys shown in this project are samples from a small order I purchased to conduct field research.  To test out the product, I sold Joeys at flea markets and a weekend trial kiosk.  I received tremendous feedback from customers and found out that they could foresee the many advantages of wearing a Joey once they tried one on! 

After such positive reviews, I believe that we are now ready to secure our first production order and bring this beneficial product to the marketplace!

We need to raise $9,000 to cover the costs for our first production order. Specifically, the $9,000 will cover:

• Materials: Italian leather and hardware

• Manufacturing costs

• Packaging & shipping

How it will work is you, the Kickstarter, will make a pledge to one of the rewards offered. When my project concludes December 14th on Kickstarter, this will be the schedule:

• Weeks 1-3: It will take about two weeks for me to receive the pledge transactions from Kickstarter.  Upon receiving the payout, I will then:
• Week 4: Place production order with my manufacturer.
• Weeks 5 - 14:  Lead time for production at the manufacturer is 6 - 9 weeks.

As soon as I receive the shipment from the manufacturer, I will send out the rewards that each Kickstarter selected.  Depending on the production schedule at the manufacturer, the earliest I will be able to send out the rewards is mid February and the latest is mid March. (I will keep everyone informed about all of the details in the "Updates" section as we move along in the process.)
