THIS IS IT - THE HOME STRETCH!
Behind the Scenes: The Dave Brown video:
My research led me to many of the production elements in the documentary. But I found Dave Brown’s footage by accident when I reached out to Dave’s brother, Doug to talk about An Article of Hope. He told me that Dave wanted to be a filmmaker after his Astronaut career was over, and that he was filming his own documentary about his Columbia mission. Dave had filmed hundreds of hours, and he always had his camera with him.
After the Columbia accident, Doug took possession of all of the tapes and he invited me to his home to screen them. He had them all ready to go when I got to his house, they were perfectly organized in a big box with more than ninety tapes. I soon discovered that Dave was a wonderful filmmaker with a natural ability to recognize and capture moments that told the Columbia story in a very intimate way. Dave brought his camera along when the crew took part in an outdoor leadership exercise. I edited a small scene from the documentary below, it was during that exercise in the mountains we see the Columbia crew transform from a shuttle crew, to family through the lens of Dave’s camera.
Doug was delighted to allow me to use the footage in our documentary, but he had his own mission, he wanted to finish the documentary his brother was never able to make. He hooked up with a production company, and a short time later “Astronaut Diaries” premiered on the Discovery Science Channel. Doug had completed his brother’s film.
Just Days Left:
With only a few days to go, the Kickstarter campaign is getting really exciting. Can we hit the goal? Now is the time to get more people involved, log on to Kickstarter, and share the link! We are very close, and during the last few days we have seen big jumps. Thanks to everyone for all the help.
In the next "behind the scenes" update one of my favorite shots in the documentary. It may surprise you, and it comes from the Dave Brown footage, late in the film.
