I am recreating the I Dream of Jeannie bottle set and inviting others to reimagine the story.
When I grew up, I thought about the premise of the show and said, "Huh??!!Did Jeannie really call Tony 'Master' and do his bidding?Why was Tony always so grouchy?Why did they make a Baghdad genie blond?"So many questions.I got a bug to recreate the space in human scale as an art installation and let people revisit this outrageous bit of TV-Land kitsch from our collective unconscious.I drew a plan, collected materials and got a bid from a metal fabricator for building the bottle's armature (metalwork bid: $2,375).
Then a friend asked if there was a performance component to the installation.Well, wouldn't that make sense?It is a TV set after all.I have begun to spread the word to performance artists about the imminent arrival of a genie bottle set, and I am asking project backers if they would like to help re-imagine the Jeannie story by contributing anonymous stories.Would you care to write a new episode?Rewrite an old one?What would happen if a U.S. airman ran into an Iraqi genie today?Do you have a Barbara Eden or Larry Hagman fantasy? Perhaps you could do a one-page treatment for a new Hollywood pitch.Or write a short scene.Fabric Art meets TV-land kitsch meets Postsecret....
To recap, I am seeking project backers for help with two things:paying the metalworkers, and reimagining the Jeannie story for today.A successful campaign will get the bottle built and allow people to interact with it.My further hope is that the stories and attention generated by this Kickstarter campaign will lead to the bottle being used as a set for new versions of the Jeannie story.Your story in a series of one-acts at the Capital Fringe Festival?I hope so.The rewards are substantial and include costume and bottle use, an e-book collection of the new stories generated, and enjoyment of a great "Unveiling Party."Look over the rewards and see if something appeals to you.Then, please, join me!

The metal fabricators predict that they will be finished with their work toward the end of February after which time I will have 6 weeks to complete the bottle drapery, upholstery, pillows and party planning. It will be a busy time, but enjoyable too. And finishing the Kickstarter campaign by mid-March should give me plenty of time to prepare the party and the correct number of swag bags. I'll be finishing the costumes and pillows in February, and I have a clear vision for the bottle. This project has been percolating in my head a long time. It is fully brewed!
