Learning "to see" is the most fundamental task for an artist. Drawing directly from life in ink has taught me to trust my hand and eye connection as I must live with the lines I put on the paper. And it also has taught me to let go, and risk, being in the moment, to put the lines down with spirit and conviction, win or lose. My lines do have this spirit of life. The ultimate use of the creative process is about transforming our consciousness and living sustainably in harmony with all life.
In 2000 I published a book of ink drawings produced over 16 years on the NYC Subway. This book has been well received and sold in the MTA Transit Museums. For this new project I will pull together a much broader spectrum of drawings from the last 40 years. Living and working in New York City has provided me with fertile ground to cultivate ideas and observe the greatest human diversity on the planet. This exciting book will include drawings of subway riders; buildings and locals (e.g., bars, cafes, restaurants, waiting rooms, music events, poetry readings); portraits of the wonderful people I have been blessed to meet; and studies from the great master works in museums; The LIVING LINE will also document the development of themes and ideas I have explored through line drawing..
The "LIVING LINE: A 40 Year Odyssey Through Drawings" will be at least 100 pages and have between 75 - 150 ink drawings interspersed with NY stories, insights about life in the city, and thoughts about culture and the creative process. There will be a limited 75 hardcover Collector Edition books available plus a soft-cover edition for wider distribution. This book will provide an intimate look at life through the sensitive eyes of an artist.
It is very important to me to get my work out there for people to see and enjoy. Having spent my entire adult life translating the world around me into ink lines, has offered me the opportunity to be an observer, to collect impressions and see much of what others pass by unnoticed. Being an artist and learning "to see", and drawing continuously over many years, has kept me connected to life in an honest and passionate way. I hope this book becomes a reality and you too have the opportunity to take this odyssey through the living line. One of my main goals as an artist and a man, is to bring my expertise of the Creative Process to personally transform myself to a higher level of consciousness, but also to disseminate what I know and have learned to others. Without widespread use and understanding of the creative process, we lessen our ability to envision, actualize and sustain life on this planet.
If you know me and my work or not, this is your opportunity to jump in and be part of of the creative process with me. I want your support so I can bring these drawings together in a meaningful way and share them with others. This is your opportunity to support my life's work.
The money collected will pay for compilation, layout / design, printing, launch and distribution plus payment processing fees, and I hope new drawings.
The holidays are coming and this will make a perfect gift. I do appreciate very much your interest and I know you will return again and again to look at the "living lines" in this book.
I will list all my backers in the book to so their vital support will be acknowledged and always be with the book.

NY
I am a native of New Mexico and became fascinated at an early age in the abundance of culture, including the New York School via Taos, New Mexico and the indigenous Native American influences. I moved to New York City to be in the center of the international artworld. I have been living and working here the last 28 years, where I have been exhibiting my work in New York City and internationally. I work in drawing, painting, printmaking, photography and writing. My work is in many collections and I have curated exhibitions, developed art organizations and published one book of drawings made on the NYC subway.
Early in my journey as an artist, my philosophic and esoteric studies broadened my understanding of the Creative Process as a major life process, responsible for our evolution spiritually and in consciousness. At one point it became clear that my one and only goal is to wake up into a more conscious state where by my real purpose could be understood and actualized. The content of my work began to express this life long inner struggle to "know thyself". Along with this acknowledgment of "the work" on oneself, became a study of the creative process as a major life process that is fundamental for mankind's evolution and success as a specie. Having learned "to see" and sustaining an observer's role throughout my life has sensitized my ability to think outside the box. I have been able to see see problems that others do not, as well as finding solutions to problems. As my awareness and expertise evolved, so has my social awareness and my desire to affect social program development and policy. I lead the artists in Albuquerque to form a focal point for connection and collaborating as well as communicating with the public. I then turned to the performing arts where I lead another successful effort to organize a performing/music center. My work with the creative process has clearly helped me to bring my understanding of creativity into the public sector, developing ideas for prison reform, environmental concerns, the mental health and functionality of the "family unit"; and the reform of out educational system. I have lectured about the Creative Process and am working on a book to fill in some of the blanks about it's function and accessibility. It is very important for people who do understand this process, to help educate others who do not, because the critical times we live in requires that we maximize our use of creativity to balance out the destructive forces that are at work. My book project, "The Living Line". is about seeing; about being in the moment and making the necessary relationships between ourselves and our environment. I am committed to my work as an artist and continue to produce new works and I am planning a retrospective exhibition for the near future. But my work as a creative man, transcends just a connection with creativity and art, and is clearly more about the ultimate use of this process as a means to transform human being into "higher beings". We must take the risks required of the creative process and connect with other vital creative beings in all sectors of life, who come together with a common understanding in hopes of producing creative, synergistic relationships (creating more than the sum of the parts). We must visualize together a successful and sustainable life model for our future generations.
Thank you for your interest in my project and I hope we can partner up to make this book of drawings a reality. But even more importantly, I hope you will stay connected to me and let me share with you some of my knowledge and experience in this process to become more creative in a purposeful way.
All the best,
Richard Gins
