About this project

THE STORY:

CHESS MOVIE is an independent, feature documentary that goes inside I.S. 318, a public junior high school in Brooklyn, New York, home to one of the best scholastic chess programs in the nation. The I.S 318 chess team has won over 26 national titles in the last 10 years and they work hard for it. I.S. 318 is a Title 1 school which means that over 60% of its students are below the poverty level. While most families struggle to meet their financial needs and the school wrestles with tightening budgets, the chess team finds a way to stay on top. CHESS MOVIE will follow the 318 chess team for one season as they prepare for the 2010 USCF National Championships. Viewers will go inside the lives of these young players at home and at school to understand how chess inspires them to succeed. Why is this Brooklyn team so successful year after year? What is it about this ancient game that moves people to do great things? Thru energized, artful visuals and intimate character stories, CHESS MOVIE reveals the timeless beauty of 32 carved pieces and a checkered board as seen thru the eyes of these junior high school champions.

STATUS: IN DEVELOPMENT

We are currently shooting and editing a pitch reel to raise money for production. We've been using a borrowed camera up to this point but now we need to buy our own. The camera we want to purchase is the Sony EX1..

Rescued Media

Straightpin New York, NY

Rescued Media Inc. was started by Katie and Nelson Dellamaggiore, husband and wife and successful producer/editor team. In 2008 our work on the A&E Classroom documentary "Ur Life Online" was nominated for an Emmy award. When we set our sights on making our own feature documentary the only key component missing (besides a trust fund!) was a talented eye to run the camera. Fortunately we didn't have to look far, Brian Schulz, Katie's brother is an Emmy award winning cinematographer at Major League Baseball Productions. Our mascot/boom operator is Duff the Dog. He's the rescued one in Rescued Media. And that's our tiny film crew.
