Redefining media's portrayal of Appalachia through multimedia stories about women who are giving back to the land they love.
UPDATE: Thanks so much to everyone who has shared or backed the project. We've reached our goal, but it isn't over yet! We have three more weeks and three more funding goals. If we raise:
$4000: We will print and hang photos to exhibit in a gallery in Appalachia and then later at Tufts University's Slater Gallery.
$5500: We will spend another month traveling around the region documenting the lives of these women and getting deeper into issues.
$7000: This one is a secret....you'll have to wait and see until we've reached our first goal!
We will use multimedia storytelling to share the lives of women who express their connection with the land and culture of Southern Appalachia through arts, music, and activism. We want to show every part of these women’s lives, from the every day to the extraordinary. Through these stories, we hope to redefine the way that outsiders see and think about Appalachia. We will create multimedia stories combining photographs and audio, which will be posted online throughout the course of the next two months.
We will be documenting the lives and work of eight women who have a
strong connection to Southern Appalachia. These women include:
• Amelia, bar owner and advocate for coal miners
• Debra, beekeeper and healer
• Janell, natural building educator for women around the world
• Rising Appalachia, a band that melds traditional mountain music with
other genres to rise above cultural stereotypes
• Sara Day, Kentucky native, entrepreneur, and musician
Why support this project?
We want to show Appalachia through the eyes of the women that we meet
who are rooted and proud to be here. Too often this place is portrayed
in the media as backwards and full of people living tragic lives. This is not an honest reflection of how people feel. It needs to be understood that the land, people, and culture of this region have been manipulated and used for hundreds of years. Of course there has been struggle. And still, there have
remained thriving community, pride, beauty and culture. It is a
resilient place, full of resilient people. By documenting the lives
and work of inspiring women who call Appalachia home, we hope to shed
light on the true nature of this place. We want to express to others
outside of Appalachia the real lives of people we encounter. We want
the world to hear what these women are saying: we are here.
