What is The Artist's Path?
The Artist's Path is a non profit arts organization that explores the thesis that art and artists have the capacity to make us laugh, to make us cry, to make us think, to create positive change in individuals and in society. We examine this proposition in an annual festival that pairs a theme with an artistic discipline. Our first festival in April 2011 was The Playwright's Response to Conflict and Social Justice which included 3 full length plays (The Guys, The Syringa Tree and SEVEN), two humanities lectures, New Play Series and acting workshops for students.
In April 2012, we will combine new Monologues, Music, and Movement as we explore the theme-- Love Makes the World Go Round. With sufficient funding this festival will include five performances of a two hour show comprising selected Monologue submissions from four states, an indy film screening mid week about a young, free spirited man who suddenly discovers he is a father, a humanities lecture on Love in Dramatic Literature, and workshops for students. To date our monologues explore love in the context of lovers, first love, love of the band of brothers and sisters in times of war, forbidden love, love of parent, love of community, love of God, love of touch, love of eating, love of sport, love of country, love of that car that has seen us through times of tragedy and times of great joy and new submissions arrive every few days.
What are you trying to do?
We seek to raise $17,000 on KickStarter to fund Path 2012 Love Makes the World Go Round.
Funds will be used to compensate festival director, writers, actors, dancers, composers, musicians, film artists, tech & set designers. Other expenses include venue costs, costuming, marketing, videotaping, photography, graphic designers, printing, website maintenance, office expenses, and other relevant project costs.
Our presentations include Talk Backs when we examine the question of the place of art and the artist in society and in particular the effect of the current or past performances.
What is your Mission/Vision?
Mission: (A statement of why we exist.)
Our mission is to encourage, support and showcase artists’ work while entertaining and educating the public concerning the role of the artist in society through annual events that examine the path of the artist through specific disciplines and themes.
Vision: (A picture of what we want to be in the future.)
The Artist’s Path will become a regional, national and international leader in the arts, building bridges between cultures, exploring the source of artistic inspiration, discovering the diversity within the artistic communities of the world, all while examining the role of the artist in society and whether the artist can effect change.
"It is the artists of the world, the feelers and the thinkers, who will ultimately save us; who can articulate, educate, defy, insist, sing, and shout the big dreams." Leonard Bernstein
And who are you?
The Artist's Path was founded in 2009 by Gail Mangham whose bio appears on this page. It is a 501 (c) (3) public charity. Artists from different disciplines as well as humanities scholars from Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas will participate in Path 2012. Below is small excerpt from a monologue titled First Person, by Kirt Shineman from Phoenix. An African-American or Hispanic young man has lost his father and...
AARON
(He’s put the basketball on the podium.) When Mom asked me to do this, to say a few words, I tried to say “No. I don’t want to.” But I couldn’t. I only shrugged, and thought she’d let me off the hook. She heard my silence, and all she said was, “You could say it in your own way. Use your words, not mine, not Grandma’s. Find your words and you’ll find his.” You know how Mom talks. I had no clue what she meant. I remember just standin’ there, in the kitchen, you know, and she looked at me, heavy-like, and she just raised her eye-brows, and whispered, “Feel him, and listen. Recall the love you learned from your father. The first person who taught you how to tie your shoes, the first person who held you when you fell, the first person by your bed when you thought there was a monster at your window.” I did. I do. I recall how he was the first person who taught me the ‘da beat of life.
A small sample of some of the many monologues that have arrived for Path 2012.
In addition to our writers volunteers who are either artists or who have an abiding interest in the arts come together to make the week long festival happen. We partner with colleges including Prescott College and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the Prescott Film Festival, various theater venues and a variety of businesses in the area. We are setting up partnerships with five local non profits who deal with children, poverty, social justice, and arts issues. Each will be profiled at one of the 5 performances and 10% of net proceeds for that performance will go to that organization.
What are your core beliefs?
We believe in the position taking by Leonard Bernstein, when he stated "It is the artists of the world, the feelers and the thinkers, who will ultimately save us; who can articulate, educate, defy, insist, sing, and shout the big dreams."
We believe that art and artists are essential to the
health of any community, that artists should be compensated, that we should
conduct any discussions according to the principles outlined in The Artist's
Path's Guide to Civil Discourse.
I want to help, but I can't pledge financially.

Walking
the Artist's Path...
is
both challenge and reward.
Sometimes our creations survive eons.
Sometimes they are but a fleeting thought
that has not found form.
Some times we are honored and compensated.
Often we work alone and without support.
But there are those times when our creations
reach out to an individual, to a whole society
and change is manifest.
The person changes; the world changes.
his capacity to inspire change is the artist's mandate
and gift to the universe.

Note from Gail: It is my great pleasure and honor to know and work with artists of all kinds in Central Arizona. With this current project we begin to move beyond the borders of the Grand Canyon state and in time we plan to work with our sister cities in Mexico and El Salvador and from there step onto a path of discovery that takes us around the world as we explore the place of the artist in the disparate communities of our planet.
