About this project
The brutal labor, sour thoughts, lucid exploits, and eventual addictions of the hollow (calloused Geist settles for less than) will be an installation that includes drawings, audio, video, structural elements, and an orchestrated performance with a large ensemble of musicians. The title of the performance is "Black Licorice Blues".
The development of this show comes from my personal experience as a manual laborer in the Tennessee area. I am interested in the trauma I associate with the subculture of regional workers. The evening will allow viewers access to a confessional to tell their own personal story or to role play as a victim if it makes the viewer feel any better. My brother is an accomplished musician and composer. We are collaborating on the orchestration. The money raised will be used to hire a large ensemble of musicians for rehersals, the evening performance, and a studio recording of the piece to be released on a limited edition cd with a booklet of the works included in the show. It will also be used for all art related materials in and associated with the show.

It is just that. It is something installed in a specific location (not necessarily site specific). I like to create interactive scenarios with my work. My installations include multimedia that are connected in some way. Each piece in the project can stand alone, but it becomes part of a loose story that hints at narrative. The viewer can make obvious connections from a drawing to a video projected on the wall or a found object.

The performance is a backdrop to the whole narrative (I use that term loosely). It is more or less a soundtrack that conveys emotion and movement and gives the show a cinematic experience. The band includes piano, bass, drums, guitar, trumpet, trombone, french horn, the saw, air compressed nail gun, reel to reel tape, and other noise related elements. It will also have a theatrical element that happens while the music is played.

I think you will recognize that this body of work is most definitely by me, but you will also notice a big change. My time, experience, and education in Los Angeles has opened me up to a whole new way of perceiving what I do.

This show's theme is rooted in the observed and experienced trauma in the work force that drives the world - call it Capitalism, or whatever you want. The pencil embodies this idea for me beautifully.

This is actually way under budget. Some people may wonder if I really would use this money for an art production. Absolutely is the answer. First off, Kickstarter reviews projects for approval. Where would it go? I can give you a rough idea. 7 musicians for rehearsals and performance will be approximately $1,500. Studio technician and recording will be approximately $800. Sound and light operation will run around $250. Charting and orchestration will be about $250. CD art and production will be around $800. Shirts and other promotionals will be about $800. and general art and construction material will be about $600. I can assure you that this isn't going straight to the pocket for a little vacation.

The event will be held on Friday, April 6 from 7pm until we are done. The performance will begin at around 9pm.
