Shook Foil's freshman effort. The band is recording its first ever, thus-far untitled, full-length LP at Glow In The Dark studios!
Dear Shook,
My name is Virginia and I am 7 years old. Please make a full-length record. I asked Santa for a Shook Foil LP album and he didn't give me one, so I stopped believing in him. Now I'm questioning other things, too: Is the tooth fairy real, or does mommy just sneak into my room at night? Why did mommy leave daddy? Why did daddy need to get a restraining order against mommy? How come daddy never notices when I lose a tooth?
These are just a few examples of my worries and doubts. Sometimes I doubt you'll ever make a full length record. After two EPs in the past two years, it's now or never, Shookybear. Or it could be later I guess but let's just do it now.
Love,
Virginia
This is just one of thousands of examples of the types of letters we could possibly get from young, bright-eyed fans wanting us to make a record. Yes, Virginia, there is a Shook Foil LP on its way, but we can't do it without your help, or actually probably your father's help.
For us, and when we say us, we mean Gabe Seibel, Grayson Campbell, Thomas Lockwood, and Aaron Hodgin, Shook Foil is a big commitment. We've done a lot to get to where we are now. In the year since most of us graduated, we've devoted our lives to making music. We've moved into a house in southeast Atlanta in order to have a full-time rehearsal and recording space. We've spent countless hours writing, arranging, rehearsing, performing, and demoing our music, and now we're just about ready to make our first full-length album as a band.
And here's how we're going to do it:
Let us begin with a story.
One fateful night, at our friend Micah's birthday party, we met a guy named Steven Tracy. Steven works at Glow In The Dark studios, and he invited us to come by some time to take a tour. We've only ever recorded in home studios with the fantastic Mr. Joel Seibel, Gabe's big brother, so we were excited, albeit intimidated, to see how fancy people make fancy records and such. Steven turned out to be a really super guy, and he helped give us a vision for the album.
After a show one night, Steven came up with an idea. He said we had a really strong live vibe, so we might want to try live-tracking the songs instead of taking them piece-by-piece. This is pretty similar to how we recorded our last EP, Little Significance. So we went into the studio to try it out, recording our song Some Heavy Weight. Not only were we happy with the way the song turned out, but we got REALLY excited about doing the rest of the album!
So here we are...
If the Kickstarter is successfully funded, we'll find ourselves back in the studio in late March or early April, this time for about ten songs instead of one. We'll spend the time between now and then finishing up the writing, demoing, playing shows (including at least one wedding), and raising funds. The funds we raise will not only pay for the studio and production, but also the cost of printing physical copies of the CDs. Thanks very much for reading all the way down to here and considering supporting us!
Love from each of your boys,
Shook Foil
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Once the project is funded and the album is recorded, we'll have to make album artwork, get it professionally packaged, and start promoting. One of the biggest risks we run is the risk of having 1,000 copies of the album sitting in boxes in our closet. So the next step is touring, promoting, and convincing people that we're not just one of the million bands they have no reason to listen to.
