About this project
Hi friends - thank you for visiting my fundraising page!
This May I'm taking a quintet of amazing musicians from Nashville into the studio to record my debut album. The album will feature original works of mine that I've written for the Nashville Jazz Workshop Jam Session. In case you don't know what that is, allow me a moment to explain.
The Nashville Jazz Workshop was founded in 1998 by Lori Mechem and Roger Spencer to provide a gathering place for musicians, students, and jazz fans to take classes, see performances, and nurture the great music of jazz. Historically, the music of jazz has been passed on to others by means of aural tradition; thus jam sessions have played a key role in the development and livelihood of the music.
When I moved to Nashville in 2008, I found a wealth of incredible musicians but a dearth of reliable jazz jam sessions. In shaping the NJW jam, I wanted to make sure it was strong enough to attract professionals, but informative and welcoming enough to be accessible to amateurs and listeners alike. One of the elements I incorporated into the jam is writing a new tune for each session - I have the band play through it on sight, but also hand out copies of the new tune to all in attendance. I've found this process gives the audience a better grasp of what's happening in the music (a key element in a successful jam session), and also allowed me to gain invaluable feedback on my compositions.
This collaborative process has left me with an abundance of tunes that need to be heard in their final, polished form. The process of studio recording is an expensive proposition however, especially for a self-funded project. The resources raised here will be used to pay for the studio time and the incredible band I've hired featuring some of Nashville's finest musicians: Matthew White, Bruce Dudley, Jonathan Wires, and Josh Hunt. We're headed to the studio the second week of May to record these tunes, and I hope that you will become involved and continue this project's collaborative effort!

Evan Cobb is an instrumentalist, composer, and educator based in Nashville, TN. After diverse musical studies including choirs, piano lessons, and a college oboe performance degree, Evan found his voice on the saxophone. This included founding and leading the jamband Buddha's Belly, nominated as a finalist for Best New Entertainer in the Chicago Music Awards of 2005. After two years of jazz studies culminating in a master's degree in 2008, Evan moved to Nashville, Tennessee. Since his relocation, Evan has worked in myriad ensembles and styles, including the Nashville Symphony, the Nashville Jazz Orchestra, The Dynamites, and T. Graham Brown, to name a few. Cobb has over 30 private students of the oboe, saxophone, clarinet, and flute, teaches a college course on music appreciation, and leads the monthly jam session at the Nashville Jazz Workshop.
