Photo-main

A photo book documenting my travels with ashtanga yoga from the perspective of the yoga mat.

In November I will be traveling to India to practice yoga for 3 months and then to South Africa to see my mom. Since I am only allowed two pieces of luggage totaling 50kg and you probably cannot fold up into my suitcase for the 24 hours of travel, I would like to share with you where this journey of yoga is taking me.

For the past 4 years I have practiced 'Mysore Style' Ashtanga yoga 6 days a week (it is not practiced on Saturdays or New / Full moons) and along the way I have noticed the changing scenery from the practice space as I traveled except for the consistent rubber weave of the Manduka mat. Last year I traveled to the home of Ashtanga yoga, the Shri K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India to study with Sharath, the Grandson of the founder, 'Guruji'. This year I will be heading back there as well as a few other places in India. From there I will be visiting with my mom who is in Swaziland with the Peace Corps. Together we will visit Cape Town, South Africa.

I believe that there are no limits to where the physical practice of yoga can take an individual. Through documenting the journey of my travels from the perspective of the mat, I will show that the Path of Yoga is more then practicing postures, asana, and regardless of location steady focus lends to the peace-fullness within the practice. Through the images in this book I will show that no matter where yoga is practiced, it leads to transformation.

How you will directly help this project . . .

Using analog 120mm film and a Holga camera (skinny jeans included) to capture a moment from the back edge of the mat creating a 'dream like' image, I will compile the images into a book that can be shared with you. Your money will go directly into funding the film and cost of publishing 100 copies of the 'Path of Yoga'.

($12 per roll of film + $18 development of film) X 20 rolls of film = $600

$2,100 for publishing 100 copies of book.

$300 Kickstarter's cut

6 days a week I will continue to practice. Capturing a moment from the back edge of the yoga mat using analog 120mm film (& Hipstamatic iPhone app as backup). When we reach the goal of $3,000 this project, because of your support will see the light of day and you will hold in your hands the creation of this amazing journey.

In the end, to be able to share with you this story in a photo book documenting the trip would be icing to this cake. Sharing that slice of cake with you, I would say priceless, but $3,000 is what it will take to make it happen.

Thanks for having a look!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Some of the biggest risks I can think of are not doing this project. If we fail to dream, to risk, and be human then we are not serving ourselves.

I have my ticket purchased, pasport and visa updated, 120mm Holga camera (Agfa clipper as a backup,) and bags almost packed.
I can prepare for the expected issues that may arrise with; film, layout of book, finding you great postcards, and being on the road overseas.

What I do not know about I can not prepare for, it is unexpected. In that place of not knowing I can find comfort in knowing that I can find answers through community. In nursing school, one of the first things we are taught is to seek help, ask questions if we do not know the answers. From a place of being uncertain I have found that there is supreme strength in being open to all of life's possibilities and answers.

I ask for your support to fund this reality, it is an honor to be sharing this project idea with you.
