SPACE on Ryder Farm had an incredibly successful inaugural season, and we need your help to keep moving forward in 2012!
SPACE's mission is to support and nurture emerging artists by providing a workshop and retreat space singular in its ability to reinvigorate the artist's spirit and their work. SPACE is the answer to dormant creativity, giving artists time and space to do what they do best: create.
Ryder Farm is located in Brewster, NY, and has been in the Ryder family since 1795. The farm spans 126 acres -- land that includes farmland as well as ponds, natural amphitheaters, trails and numerous historical structures. The farm was a pioneer in the nation's green movement by being one of the first farms to go organic in the 1970s.
OUR INAUGURAL SEASON
The Art of it
After our 2010 season of development, SPACE launched its first official season of Artists’ Residencies and Fellowships in 2011. Over the course of the 2011 season, SPACE hosted over 100 artists as they worked on 27 projects! We were awed by the work of each and every participating artist. Some highlights of the season included work in development from The Old Vic New Voices (Artistic Director, Kevin Spacey), Off-Broadway theatre company ARS NOVA, Bekah Brunstetter (Be a Good Little Widow, Oohrah!), Anna Kerrigan (winner of Best Screenplay for Five Days Gone at the Brooklyn Film Festival), and Santino Fontana (Drama Desk Award for his performance in the Broadway production of Brighton Beach Memoirs).
Thanks to the generosity of our 2010 Kickstarter supporters, we were able to make extensive renovations to the Corncrib, a rustic cottage on Ryder Farm. A robust team of artist volunteers, lead by the masterful John Ryder, transformed the structure in March of last year from a run-down cottage to a fully functional loft, bathroom, kitchen, and office. This season, the Corncrib was homebase for SPACE, serving as our welcome center, wi-fi hotspot, canteen, and culinary hub, where we prepared three farm-fresh meals a day.
- Fund the stays of our 2012 Fellows.
- Continue the renovation of The Sycamores (the 1790s Ryder Family homestead) - the nucleus of SPACE's operation. This year's renovations will focus on upgrading the bathrooms, as well as making repairs resulting from Hurricane Irene and the other recent extreme weather.
- Construct and install a dock on the shore of Peach Lake, which will allow all SPACE visitors to enjoy a swim, boat ride, or simply a contemplative sit on the dock.
- Purchase a 20x20 industrial tent, which will allow SPACE residents and fellows to work outdoors, rain or shine.
