The GRAND REWARD for a donation of $500 dollars or more is to have your name immortalized as a Grand Sponsor of Mal-Mart.... That's right, Donate $500 and a room in the structure will be NAMED AFTER YOU! Including Signage... For example, those interested in the musical arts can have the acoustic performance room named after them... It would be a great way to participate and feel involved. Everyone who visits mal-mart will know your name! You'll also get the amazing Mal-Mart video, and the Signed photo... plus a mystery reward found just for you from somewhere in BRC... maybe a piece of the Man might be making it's way back to you... who knows...? can u handle the suspense....?
Kids -- I'd like to do your group photo @ the structure on THURSDAY, does that work? F indicated that would be better than Weds. Sadly I arrive at BRC on Tuesday, this will give me some time to set up and acclimate my virgin travel companions. I will also be hanging around to photograph the people that backed my kickstarter project on Thursday and Friday afternoon, God Willing.
Hey Shaun buddy... Your dates are screwy for the events bud - Thursday is the 2nd but not the 3rd, that's Friday - and Friday the 4th is actually Saturday - Adjust it on all your stuff sent out - People the corrected dates will be up on the mal-mart site...
See ya all soon
E
Happy to be backing you guys! A lot of people from my playa/kickstarter project are interested in Mal-Mart and we're probably going to meet up @ 7:30 and Esplanade on Weds if the Mal-Mart crew wants a group photo, I'll have all my gear there, I arrive on the 30th. Or perhaps we can arrange something at night when you're all LED-lit-up. Gods bless Mal-Mart.
Might not be the place for this but here goes.......I have joined the camp since it seems to be a place to have a good time......I am a 9 year vet with time served in the Toyko Post Office and as a nude greeter. I have send in my $ but I still am not sure if there is help needed at setup or where my room in the structure will be so I can decorate it appropriately, Maybe I am asking too many questions but to participate I need some content. Are pledges different than camp dues?
Mal-Mart is family to many of us, and you can be certain that ALL BRC related decisions are made in the spirit of community, respect, and cooperation. You need to come party with us in person, Schwan! Our Mal-Mart Playa location is always offering great specials on hugs, kisses, and tequila shots. Embrace the love, brother. We come in peace.
Schwan,
My name is f. I'm the designer of Mal-Mart. i'd appreciate it if you delete your first statement. your comments, especially here, are thoughtless and damaging. I have never been contacted by you about this matter. But the neighboring camps that did approach us with any request to delay our events to have events of there own, were taken seriously and welcomed to join our parties. So, it is surprising that this would be the first i would hear of your complaint, and to lodge your first contact in this forum is not very Burning Man like. If you would like to contact us through our web site ( mal-mart.org ) we will listen. How about you give a donation to counter react some of the damage you might have caused. And come by the camp. if you gave it a chance you might just love us.
I'm sorry for the harsh tone. It's easy to get carried away on the Internet as I'm sure we're all aware. I didn't mean to get all "Get off my lawn!" and I certainly agree with the principle that quiet-lovers need to respect the rights of others to get crazy-go-nuts. The volume did seem louder than any other camps I encountered (besides dedicated sound/dance camps), but if it was in fact under the 300-watt limit then I humbly retract my statement.
Hey Schwan. In the spirit of Burning Man, wouldn't you agree that posting a comment stating we're "inconsiderate citizens" is in bad form itself?! The word "citizen" at Burning Man means so much more than here in the "real world", you've been to Burning Man, you know we all have an understanding of what happens... including maybe sometimes being lenient, caring and being authentic with each other. Posting comments after the fact is just a waste of time. You remember the place it's held right? In the desert! You remember the vast amounts of space? The way the wind blows... you know... simple physics. Oh yeah you also know of timing and chance.. well we're sorry if at some point a camp we're living near is having a quiet lounge performance when we're partying our asses off but that's the way it works. If the Golden Cafe was really swamped by our inappropriately "loud" system they surely would have talked to us about it because we were good neighbors with them and, yes, we partied together. The reason why we're in the location we are this year is because Mal-Mart was one of the most loved and respected camps there, and I'm sure we will be this year. Your "going too far" and calling us "inconsiderate citizens" is really so incredibly ridiculous when all we were doing was bringing joy and music to Black Rock City. Why don't you chill out... and if you're going this year try dancing crazy for a bit and get that frustration out. It feels good. Try the dance floor, not a Kickstarter page where people are working hard to raise money for something they believe in.
As only a second time attendee, the Campers of Mal-Mart have taking me under their wing to show me the ropes. If there is one universal lesson that they have taught me about the BM experience, it is about total respect and collaboration with the Black Rock community. Our meetings are spent reviewing BRC requirements and standards. It is hard for me to believe that we would do anything like that.
Schwan - I was a part of Mal-Mart that in 2008 and I can tell you not only did we not receive any complaints but we made great friends with all our neighbors. If anyone had a problem, they didn't make us aware of it. Two years is a long time to carry a grudge you didn't bother to address at the time.
Mal-Mart's sound system did not exceed the requested limits at all. Nor will it this year. As for us being refferred to as bad citizens. Please do not leave disrespectful and innaccurate messages here. The golden cafe camp hung out and partied with us... they never expressed any such thing to us. And for the record, the burning man organization told us that they received more mesages of support for mal-mart than any other camp. So much so that Mal-mart was invited to be placed on esplanande and 7:30.
I hope that this year Mal-Mart will respect the 300 watt sound system limit for camps not located along the 10:00 or 2:00 spokes. In 2008 their inappropriately loud system swamped out all other sound sources in the neighborhood including the delightful live improv performances at the nearby Golden Cafe. Irony and satire are great forms of expression, but commenting on Wal-Mart's bad citizenship by being inconsiderate citizens yourselves is going too far.
