In this short satire, a depressed young urbanite flees his burning home with nothing but an armload of useless luxury items.
We are seeking finishing funds for our short film, a 20-minute satirical comedy called The Burning House.
We have slaved over this baby for six months to bring it close to completion, sacrificing our personal savings and our relationships with loved ones. AND NOW YOU CAN BE A PART OF IT!!
The film turned out great and we think it'll be accepted to a good number of exciting film festivals this coming year. But in order to premiere it we just need a couple more things!
A depressed 20-something aficionado of one-of-a-kind vintage goods writes into a popular blog with a list of possessions that he would hypothetically take with him in the event of a house fire. When his house catches fire in a freak accident that very night, he flees with nothing but his armload of luxury items, and must use them to survive on the hard streets of Philadelphia.
We created this film with with the help of a fully local, organic cast and crew gleaned from Philadelphia's vibrant film community. ALL crew members were USDA organic carbon-based life forms!
Directors Karl Beyer and Scott Ross (website link) have honed their skills over six years of collaborative work on zero-budget conceptual art films, fancy advertisements, and music videos for a long list of artists such as Toro Y Moi, Big Freedia, RJD2, and Spank Rock. "The Burning House" is their narrative film debut.
As screenwriters, Scott and Karl are on a difficult quest to find a balance between two of their very favorite things: asinine comedy and thought-provoking social commentary.
Sean Close is an actor based in Philadelphia who has experience across a wide spectrum of theater and film--from Shakespearean tragedies to sketch comedy. He's been lucky enough to work consistently with several professional theater companies since graduating from college a few years ago. "The Burning House" marks his first lead role in a film and his first time wearing tight white jeans.
"Scott and Karl worked me to the bone... they sucked the marrow right out of me." -Sean Close, lead actor, in October 2012
Evan Younger, who is composing and recording music for the film, is also a member and lead singer of the New York-based band Miracles of Modern Science, whose live shows and recordings have received accolades from NPR Music, the New York Times blog, Spin, and Wired. His music for the film includes an original arrangement for choir and organ (featured in the trailer), and an original recording of a public domain Chopin piece.
WELL WHADDAYA WANT MY MONEY FOR?!
We chose this amount for our goal because it is the absolute minimum we need for the following services, all of which have been generously quoted at a discounted rate because of our tiny budget :
-Sound mixing and mastering by a professional sound designer
-Custom choral and piano score by composer Evan Younger of the band Miracles of Modern Science, plus fees for the recording and performers (Evan did the choral piece featured in the trailer!).
-ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) to re-record lines that are not audible from on-set recordings
-Foley and sound effects by a professional sound designer
As any aspiring filmmaker soon learns, these are really important steps to take in finishing a film for distribution on the big boy festival circuit. Without a good mix, audible dialogue, and expert Foley, films tend to sound distractingly quiet and fail to maintain viewers' suspension of disbelief:
"Films are 50 percent visual and 50 percent sound. Sometimes sound even overplays the visual." - David Lynch
American movies know you spend money on sound. Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t spend money on it. -Danny Boyle
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!
Please check out our fantastic awards for every level of donation. For only $30, you can get a high quality copy of the film plus a T-shirt featuring the illustration below, of Trystan as a fetus!
We are really grateful for your support. Hopefully we can meet you at the screening in your hometown in 2013!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Since the film is already nearly done, and it's already looking good, our main challenge will be getting the film out into the world. It's important for us to submit it to a large number of festivals, promote it online, arrange local screenings, and reach out to the press. We have a list of about a dozen film festivals (large and small, prestigious and niche) we are going to apply to in order to guarantee that our film will be seen, even if it doesn't get into the biggest ones out there. We are also launching a website which will have downloads and streams of the film available for a low price. We have a lot of experience with writing press releases and getting the film out there through our friends and colleagues.
The rewards that we have listed for your pledges are all fairly straightforward. We can guarantee that we have the ability to fulfill all of them on time:
Living in Philadelphia, where excellent screen printers are as plentiful as apples in autumn, we will have no problem getting our T-shirts printed and shipped with ease, on time, no matter the number. The T-shirt will feature the "Sean-Fetus" work shown above, which should translate into being screen printed pretty well since it is a high contrast black and white drawing.
As for the non-material rewards (bartending your party, editing or shooting your video): while we promise to make ourselves as available as possible, there may be events that, for some grave reason, one of us is not able to attend. There are two of us, however, and we have the ability to film and edit independently of one another, which gives us a lot of leeway in terms of availability, in the unlikely event that it became a problem. So we ask you to be flexible in your scheduling requests for these rewards.
Lastly, it should be noted that the delivery months for the videography, editing, and bar-tending mark the beginning of when these rewards may be redeemed, and are not expiration dates. So if you choose the video editing package, we will be available to edit your material beginning in December.
One more disclaimer: the editing and videography rewards will have a limit of 20 hours of labor, after which we will hand over the footage and project files to you, on a hard drive provided by you.
Please feel free to get in touch with any other questions. Thank you for your support!!
