A new experimental semi-opera about optics and family and brilliance and madness and devotion.
We'd like to make another semi-opera!
Last year, David Amaral and I collaborated to create a theatrical piece that combined aspects of opera and regular performance. We were kinda thrilled by how things turned out, and were stunned by audience and critical response (Chicago Reader).
So we are starting to make another. In December we were accepted as artists-in-residence at High Concept Laboratories to develop this new work, based on the life of physicist Albert Michelson. We assembled a brilliant ensemble (Ruth Bistrow, Daiva Bhandari, Katy Collins, Anthony DeMarco, Nicole Ripley, Jon Stutzman, Lindsay Verstegen, Max Wirt) and began devising as a group. Meanwhile, I've been composing like crazy, writing for a 16 piece chamber ensemble and 5 voices.
And it's coming together! Our story is interesting and moving, our cast is fantastic and we're pretty much on track to open in February. This Kickerstarter campaign is intended to help raise funds to get the show in production. Donations will be used for performance space rental, lights, sound, set, recording the music, etc. Mounting a show is stunningly expensive particularly if you're just two punks like David and I, funding everything out of pocket. Please know that your donations will be enormously appreciated and every dollar will go toward making this big dumb vision we have, even bigger, and hopefully less dumb.
