Smith&Brown is an experimental publishing project by a non-commercial publishing company that doesn't exist (yet), Smith & Brown.
Smith&Brown is the inaugural edition of a forthcoming publishing group Smith & Brown, which has been created with the intent of publishing works that major publishers would overlook or cast aside as "unsafe" due to mass market demands.
We are looking to you, good readers and friends, to help us realize the production of this first edition, a novella that explores the ways in which we attempt to alleviate boredom in contemporary life.
We've set our goal at the very minimum in order to cover the production costs of the novella's release as a limited boxed edition, an unlimited paperback, and a digital edition. The edition will be released in conjunction with the exhibition Matthew Lusk: More Broken Glass Than There Was Window opening September 6 at Zieher Smith Gallery, New York.
We're offering some enticing rewards for our generous supporters (that means you!), and by supporting this first edition you will also be supporting future publications and collaborations by writers and artists who might otherwise have difficulty being published. Talk about more bang for your buck!
See below for more details, and feel free to ask us any questions.
Thanks so much!
Victoria & Nicole
The Novella (our first edition)
The novella Smith&Brown is an exploration of the ways in which we attempt to alleviate boredom in contemporary life. The protagonists, Smith and Brown, work as filing clerks—based on characters from the history of literature—they kill time by creating order in their work and via the three most common ways in which we typically attempt to stave off boredom: through immersion in love, the love of art, or deference to religion.
Where Will Your Money Go?
The money raised by this kickstarter will go towards the following:
- 33 Limited edition boxed novellas (design & production)

- supporter rewards of prints, totes, t-shirts (design & production)
The Limited Edition of 33 boxed novellas (see below for image) will be housed in twelve boxes created by the artist Ryan Falkowitz and twenty-one manufactured boxes based on his designs; they will be produced in seven materials (plaster, felt, rubber, cardboard, wood, black, and yellow, Plexiglass) and, like the chapter release schedule, they are divided according to the first seven numbers of the Fibonacci sequence. Each box will contain a large decorative hand-bound version of the novella as well as a paperback edition.
