About this project
THE IDEA
Many of you have seen my feature documentary, ON THE DAY: The Story of the Spirit of Scotland Pipe Band, in theatres, on television and DVD. The overwhelming 100% positive reviews from fans have been humbling, and I thank everyone who has supported the film all the way through its production and its outreach.
Now, based on the feedback and suggestions I’ve received from scores of OTD fans, I want to go one step further: to present this amazing once-in-a-lifetime story as a 3-disc box set that will be like nothing else ever produced.
In addition to the 83-mnute Director’s Cut DVD, I plan to include a dual-layer 3-hour long DVD of bonus material, an audio CD of several of the band members’ new and traditional tunes as well as their Worlds performances, a 24-page booklet about the band and the making of the film with lots of photos, and a panoramic poster of the band marching off the line. The box set will be of the highest quality and a definite collectible keepsake.
YOUR SUPPORT
This is a costly project that I cannot afford to pay for on my own. Yes, in spite of all the buzz around ON THE DAY, I still struggle to make a living as a documentary filmmaker -- I barely make enough to cover my overhead and have not been able to take a salary in three years! That’s where you come in. Together we can create a lasting legacy of the "great experiment" and the world-class players, and people, of the Spirit of Scotland Pipe Band.
I need to raise $20,000 to produce the box set and to pay for an encore screening of the film (in full HD and 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound) at the Glasgow Film Theatre on August 14, the day after the Worlds. Through Kickstarter I am counting on you to make it happen. Many people have already helped by contributing rewards at different pledge levels, and I have some great rewards to offer you! Just take a look at the list to the right and watch my video at the top of the page to see some of the rewards.

FAQ
-
According to the reward levels, I may mention you on my websites, tweets and such. But if you want to remain anonymous, that's fine, too. Just let me know.
-
Absolutely not! I will not misuse your email address or give it to anyone else. I will only communicate with you directly and remove you from the list if ask me to.
-
Yes! I welcome your generosity and will increase your reward accordingly.
-
Your support is greatly appreciated whether or not you collect your reward.
-
As soon as I reach my funding goal, I will begin mailing out the rewards. Some of the rewards, such as the box set itself, will be sent as soon as I receive them from the manufacturer or reward donor. Any rewards that have not been mailed before I leave for Scotland on August 2 will be sent out within a week of my return on August 20, 2011.
-
I will be very sad, and probably many other folks will also be disappointed. If my funding goal is not met, your credit card will not be charged. All awards will become null and void, and I will not be able to produce the box set.
-
I am very grateful for your previous support and hope that you have enjoyed watching the film. Think of the box set as the ON THE DAY "redux" version that will certainly enhance your viewing and listening pleasure on a whole other level. The DVD Director's Cut in the box set takes the listening experience from 4.0 surround to full 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound that will be remixed at Post Haste, one of Hollywood's top motion picture audio facilities. Also, all the footage will be "de-interlaced" for a sharper, higher quality image.

I'm here to answer them. Just email me at john@onthedaymovie.com and I will get right back to you.

The members in the Spirit of Scotland Pipe Band have given us all a musical gift that will last forever. I am so grateful to my dad for getting me started on the pipes, but I will never be able make a musical contribution to the world like some of the legendary players in the SoS band. I hope that this project, at least in some small way, will serve as my contribution to those who love the music.
