The Roman siege of Jerusalem; the destruction of its 2nd temple, and the controversial bargain of Rabbi Yochanan Ben Zakai. The opera.
The Roman siege of Jerusalem; the destruction of its 2nd temple, and the controversial bargain of Rabbi Yochanan Ben Zakai.
A new hybrid opera.
The year is 68 AD. The place: besieged Jerusalem. The Roman legions, led by the soon-to-become emperor Vespasian are determined to conquer the historic capital of the Jews and destroy it. The city, surrounded by thick walls and crowned by its magnificent temple, is torn from within by a raging sectarian war. The Sikrikin, a violent group of nationalist and religious fanatics, threaten to kill anyone who will surrender to the Romans or try to leave the city.
Only one man, a moderate religious leader by the name of Rabban Yohanan ben Zakkai dares to defy the orders of the zealots and arranges to be carried out of the city in a coffin, disguised as a corpse, face the fearsome Roman general Vespasian and beg him to spare the city and its inhabitants. The heroic saga of Ben Zakkai and his dramatic meeting with Vespasian, as they are told in the Babylonian Talmud (Tractate Gittin, Folio 56 a-b) carry a great historical and cultural gravity. Guided by their heroic rabbi, an unhappy nation forsook earthly bounds, immense riches and a shining temple on a hilltop, and immersed itself, instead, in study and prayer. Books and texts, rather than earthly possessions, became their daily passion. Shrouded in the fogs of time and imperfect memory, this historical moment is brought to the fore in a new operatic creation - 3WEEKS.
After presenting Moses in a wholly new and fresh way in last year production of the videOpera MOSHEH, 3weeks’ creator, Yoav Gal, is setting up, together with his two creative collaborators, Ruby Namdar and Ronit Muszkatblit, to tell the story about a hero, Rabban Yohanan Ben Zakkai, who had conceived the way that Jews would exist for the ensuing two millennia.
Forget what you think you know about opera. Expect an enveloping musical, theatrical, intellectual and psychological experience, which will keep you glued to your sit and will reverberate in your mind long after the performance.

An individual lesson with one of the project collaborators: A composition lesson with Yoav; midrash with Ruby; an acting lesson with Ronit; or a voice lesson with Heather. Whether it is a song created using Garage Band that needs to be perfected, or a better understanding of concepts such as harmony, rhythm and/or voice-leading, Yoav will share his knowledge and experience. Ronit will offer instruction on the basics of acting, gesture and movement, and how they resonate in your emotional and spiritual makeup, Heather will teach you how to sing like the Queen of the Night, and Ruby will reveal the hidden meaning in your choice of Biblical or Talmudic text. This can happen in person, or via skype, email, or other means.
