We've launched an exciting new project of our own! Introducing the Kickstarter app for iPhone!
Photo-main

A veteran of Yugoslav wars tries living a new life until his Post Traumatic Stress Disorder blurs the line between reality and horror.

SCARS: A tale of surreal horror!

Our story begins with a quiet man from Serbia named Branko. He is still new to the American way; despite working in California for the past 5 years as a nurse. He gets along with his coworkers fine enough by remaining silent for most of his shift. His only friend is Janessa; a young lady he met over the internet.

What his neighbors don't know is that he is still learning to deal with the horrific nightmares that he's been suffering from since his service in the Bosnian wars. Until one night, they manifest themselves into reality.

The creatures that he encounters range from twisted corpses to undead soldiers who try to kill him. They infest his apartment building and lurk close to the shadows. Is he dreaming all of this? Or is it a horrifying reality.

I REALLY don't want to leave my apartment.
I REALLY don't want to leave my apartment.

Branko must not only fight for his survival but to find out who or what is unleashing these demons on him. Armed with only a flashlight and a hammer. He must leave the temporary safety of his apartment and venture out into the twisted landscape that use to be his new home. In doing so, he discovers a terrible secret from his past.

STORY ELEMENTS

This story is geared closer to classic film making and pure visual story telling. If you need as idea as the the style of the picture: The sense of subdued dread and isolation of the shining, fused with the sounds and camera work of silent hill

No CGI here. Rubber monsters, Matte paintings and good old fashion grunt work punctuates this production. Music supplied courteously by ruMpel on behalf of Team Psykskallar: the Half-Life mod team behind classics like Afraid of Monsters and Cry of Fear.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

This is going to be filmed on HD, complete with 5.1 surround sound. Shooting schedule is slated for late September to early November. 23 total shooting days. Filming Locations are already locked. Permits already paid for. The shooting will take place all throughout southern Los Angeles, Bethlehem shipyards in San Pedro and Monument Valley in Utah.

WHY USE KICKSTARTER?

 The answer is simple. As of right now, Hollywood is shelling out hundreds of millions of dollars on safe bets and cannot afford to take risks. It is almost impossible to receive funding from their investors in smaller, independent projects such as this. They spend big for huge returns.

With this film, we understand that it is a small film but that isn't a mark against it. Just remember that cinema is not about how much you spend; it's about what the story has to say. You may have doubts with the subject matter but regardless if you invest or not; or you feel that you won't make any money back from distribution; keep this statistic in mind.

THE TOP GROSSING FILMS WORLD WIDE ARE OF SCIENCE FICTION, HORROR, SCIENCE FICTION.

WHERE WILL THIS FILM GO?

This film is to be distributed by Magnet films, Magnolia pictures, and Lionsgate (depending on the contract) on DVD and Blue Rays but since then, has expanded to Netflix, Amazon, and even a  limited release in theaters. Markets exist in Asia and Europe, with companies like Studio Canal and Golden Harvest who specialize in releasing a very wide range of films to foreign markets. This film will go to them too.

Due to the market, this film will also be submitted to the Cannes and Sundance festivals. As a reminder, this fundraiser is NOT meant to pay for submission fees. It is for the production ONLY.

Where is the money going?

Every penny of our $25,000 is going to cover every last thing listed below, along with the percentage of the budget:

* Sound/lighting/ camera equipment. (purchases and rentals) -  55% - 60%

* Props including blank firing weapons, including period Serbian equipment.      - 10%

* Make-up for the various dead bodies, zombies, monsters, and grisly wounds - 5%

* Special FX including miniatures, custom made gimbals, etc. - >5%

* Wardrobe for the cast, ghouls, ghosts, and soldiers. - 10% - 15%

* Lodging - The cast and crew are from Santa Barbara and San Diego and need a place to sleep. 5%

* Food - 5%

The rest is coming out of the director's pocket (the author of this page)

In order for this movie to tell it's story in the most precise and coherent way possible, requires the best of the best equipment and materials to tell this story the best way we can.

For all those who worked on low - budget horror know better than anybody that rentals is what drives up the cost. Blood and guts, clothes and guns are inexpensive but the lighting and camera equipment cost a fortune.

Take note: The going rate for an individual HMI to rent,  is $250 a day. That's nearly $6000 to rent for the entire shoot.

  • The filming will take place in southern Orange County. It's a perfect place to do low budget filming simply because of the lack of foot traffic, noise pollution, and expensive permit fees. Excellent for any film needs.

  • Yes and no. It won't have an instant cash grab effect like you would if it was a big budget theatrical release. This is a small company and this is a small movie. It will have a long term gain as DVD, Blue Ray sales continue over a number of years.
