String students from 7 Baltimore City Public Schools unite for a semester of combined orchestra rehearsals and one epic concert.
Our Program
The Greater Baltimore Youth Orchestra's (GBYO) Bridges program is an organization that provides high-quality, string education to students in Baltimore City Public Schools. Students have the opportunity to learn the violin, viola, cello, double bass, or harp.
Currently in its sixth year, the Bridges program serves 250 at-risk youth at seven different elementary and middle schools, giving those children equal access to musical experiences without respect to financial circumstances. The schools we currently serve include Wolfe St. Academy, Edgewood Elementary, Calvin Rodwell Elementary, Thomas Johnson Elementary and Middle School, Waverly Elementary, Govans Elementary, and Montessori Public Charter School.
Students in the program receive:
- A loaned instrument free-of-charge
- Free group lessons at their respective schools twice a week
- Opportunities for advancement and continued study after Bridges, including help in private lesson funding and participation in upper-level GBYO orchestras.
Our Project: FUNDING SUNDAY ORCHESTRA REHEARSALS to UNITE BALTIMORE STRING STUDENTS
Since its inception in 2006, the Bridges program has funded Sunday orchestra rehearsals for Bridges students, during which players from all seven schools get together to play in a large ensemble. The Bridges program has grown to such a size that it now supports two full string orchestras: Prelude (for beginning students) and Encore (for returning students)
These orchestral experiences build community amongst our students, instilling in them life skills of teamwork, passion, cooperative learning, and responsibility. Each student becomes a vital asset to the whole of the group as he strives to play together with others and contribute to a rich, musical experience.
However, we NEED YOUR HELP to continue these rehearsals in SPRING 2012.
This project would support the continuation of eight Bridges Sunday rehearsals in Spring 2012, culminating in a concert in late April.
The funds would specifically go towards:
- Sunday teacher pay
- Student and instrument transportation to/from rehearsals and the concert
- Supplies (music, stands, snacks, etc.)
- Space rental for the April performance
