The Sub-Sonarium is an interactive, immersive sound sculpture that mimics the chaotic sounds of rolling thunder.
The Sub-Sonarium is an exploration of the psychology that surrounds the associations between sound and emotions. It is an immersive, kinetic, interactive sound sculpture that synthesizes uncontrollable forces in a controlled environment. Standing eighteen feet tall with an equal footprint, it has two opposing doors leading to the center, where visitors are encouraged to sit, relax, listen and participate. In the spirit of the solfeggio harmonics, chanting, drones and the shamanistic traditions of past cultures, the Sub-Sonarium creates an intuitive cymatic experience for visitors to wrap themselves in, and engage with for the sake of re-alignment.
The Sub-Sonarium mimics the chaotic sounds of rolling thunder via acoustic, percussive mechanisms. Its conical chamber contains a series of long, dangling springs that are connected to large membranes embedded in the ceiling. Interacting with these springs causes movement to travel up to the membranes, creating random vibrations in the surrounding air. These atmospheric vibrations travel into our ears, where they are converted to electrochemical signals that our brains normally perceive as calming and refreshing.
At times it seems there is little escape from the fast paced, high frequency existence that we have created. RF signals blanket the air, satellites clog our atmosphere and electrons flow through endless miles of cable, in a network that connects everything. There are seven billion humans on the Earth and it is easy at times to get overwhelmed by the magnitude of this. Similar to the way a thunderstorm releases the humid tension in the air, the Sub-Sonarium is a physical, mental and spiritual re-boot. It was designed to bring temporary relief from hyper-reality based anxiety through immersion in an audible, low frequency environment. These frequencies are similar to those used to bring shifts in consciousness and achieve meditative states. The physical sensation of these sound waves also acts as a relieving force by gently caressing our bodies, usually experienced as a fuzzy tickle. The Sub-Sonarium is a Pythagorean inspired, transcendental evoking, flux inducing, Promethean healing machine. It leads visitors through an audible excursion into the cosmic womb and serves as a tool in the search for satori.
