Animal Crackers is a mix of art and poetry, created to show what would happen if nature had the power to do to us what we're doing to it
Animal Crackers is a mix of poetry and art, a creative effort by both of us. While I am primarily the artist and Jeffrey is primarily the writer, to say that one wrote while the other illustrated would be a gross generalization. For our creativity has bridged the divide and neither half would be as good without the input from the other side.
The goal from the start was to create something along the lines of an adult Dr. Seuss book. And to that end it was written in anapestic tetrameter, the poetic meter most often used by him. The illustrations were done in the same fashion typically employed by me with my other artwork, a style that has come to be termed "linelism". At first glance it might seem child-friendly with all the pretty little animals. And what kid doesn't love animal crackers? But then you open it and the truth is revealed. This book is not for kids. It is brutal and vulgar and not for the faint of heart. But neither is what we're doing to the environment. And that's the point. Though if I may take a step back and recant a prior statement, this book IS for kids. They need to see what we're doing wrong. While the change needs to start with us, it must continue with them. They are the future. They are the unfortunate shoulders upon which our hopes reside. They are not inheriting the best of worlds, nor an easy one to grow up in, but, as noted by Samuel Daniel, "by adversity are wrought the greatest works of admiration."
We think that this book is something that has never been done before, and will add a new outlook on the fight to protect nature and help the Earth. This book will make people think, and hopefully add a new vibrancy and urgency to fight to save our last wild places. Everyone that we have talked to has loved this idea, whether they consider themselves "green" or not. Of course some people out there are going to hate it, but this book is not for them. This is for the intelligent, free-thinking people out there looking for new ideas and groundbreaking artwork and writing, and are concerned with where our planet is heading.
We have decided to self publish this book because from talking to artist friends who already have books published about their work, finding a publisher is very difficult, time consuming, and expensive. And finding a publisher who will publish Animal Crackers without making us change anything would be downright impossible. My brother and I are not willing to change one word or one drawing for the sake of comfort or easiness.
I feel that right now we can easily sell hundreds of these books, and I think the sky is the limit on where we can go. We have lined up a number of places who said that they will carry it, and we are planning on having it reviewed in publications and newspapers throughout the country. I have confirmations from a couple newspapers already. To publicize Animal Crackers, it is our hope that we can have some art exhibits/book signings/readings at world renowned galleries in the United States. Already La Luz de Jesus in Los Angeles has given us a tentative thumbs up!!!!
But all of this costs money!!!!! While we feel confident enough in our project to do it ourselves, we are humble enough to know how difficult it is to do alone. And that is why we are asking for your help. All money raised will go directly towards the cost of getting this book published, printed, and out into stores... not to mention the promotional cost of traveling across the country to whatever galleries we can get exhibits set up in. We truly thank you from the bottoms of our hearts for helping us make this dream a reality. The amount of work, time, and effort that has gone into this is incredible. And to have people out there who believe in us, and are willing to donate money to our vision, is an amazing compliment and gesture!!! Thank you again!!!
