About this project

In May of 2009 "AM 1610 THE STATION" was launched in Hamtramck. It's a low-power AM radio station which is considered “hobby radio” by the FCC and doesn't require licensing. Currently, programming is comprised of independent artists and small-label music made in Michigan.

Contributions to this project are tax deductible to the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit a certified 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Tax exempt id number 38-2298435.

The Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit's Ladybug Studio (http://www.thecaid.org/) and Hamtramck’s new AM 1610 (http://station.hamtramckstar.com/) announce a new collaborative endeavor that will provide a radio journalism and production program for high school students living in Hamtramck and Southwest Detroit. The Expose Yourself to Art Radio program will run from January 2010 through May 2010 with students meeting weekly after school at a community center in Hamtramck and at the Ladybug Gallery in Southwest Detroit. After the May 2010 project completion date the program will continue and be sustainable at minimal cost since the production equipment is the main barrier in launching the program. Students' work will air on AM 1610 in both communities. The focus of the program will be the coverage and reporting of community arts by youth interviewers and producers.

Both Hamtramck and the Hubbard Farms neighborhood struggle with blight and poverty that has helped encourage crime. Popular media outlets, including radio, television and print and web based media, focus a major portion of their coverage on the negative aspects of these communities. This project intends to provide the positive perspective and shed light on two unique communities that have embraced difficult challenges and every day harness the power of celebrating our differences; embracing the creative spirit.

Hamtramck and Southwest Detroit both have a large proportion of residents engaged in the arts and cultural affairs. Hamtramck has a strong music and arts and crafts scene as well as being home to numerous performance theatres. While Southwest Detroit also celebrates a rich music influence it also has colorful Latino art and graffiti art scenes. These creative environments provide the perfect opportunity for students to produce audio documentaries exposing their unique community art scenes.

The children in the program will learn the value in supporting diverse creative communities while gaining important communication and technical skills that can be applied in their professional adult lives. Additionally, Expose Yourself to Art Radio will serve disadvantaged youth in distressed neighborhoods by allowing them to report on, engage in, and gain an understanding of the issues affecting their communities. Participants will improve self-esteem, writing and speech skills, time-management, and perseverance.

The Ladybug Studios and local university journalism professors and students will oversee mentorship and guidance to student participants. The children will make reports, write copy, make audio recordings, conduct interviews, and provide commentary. The project team will be responsible for producing audio which will be part of a radio broadcast program containing the work of all the participants.

The broadcast signal at each location has the potential to reach roughly 28,000 people. That is over 50,000 people combined. The web stream has the potential to reach billions of people from around the world. A grandmother in Bangladesh could listen to her grand child’s story about the Hamtramck Art Fair or an aunt in Los Angeles could listen to her nephew’s story about the Matrix Theatre Company in his Southwest Detroit community.

Proud Detroiters everywhere (both downtown and metropolitan), would be able to listen to these rich stories of creativity and hope and enthusiastically share them with their friends and family from around the world. And it would all begin with the children.
