10 years after earth's destruction, a reluctant hero leads a team of black ops misfits across the galaxy bent on vengeance - pulp novel
Deep Black is an epic Science Fiction novel about a reluctant hero leading a band of black ops misfits across the galaxy to avenge the destruction of the earth.
The end result of this project will be a paperback book of about 480 pages that tracks the odyssey of these heroes through half a dozen worlds. Along the way, they face amazing challenges such as:
Taserspiders, serial genocide, assassins, pirates, magmoids, an intelligent planet, mad scientists, and a nuclear machine gun.
This is pulp style sci fi like I grew up on. It is fun and thoughtful. There are serious themes but nothing objectionable in it. I wrote it for myself but I want my kids to be able to read it.
If you're like me, you prefer an honest ink and paper book over reading a computer screen but you can check out the first chapter here:
The final version will also be available as an epub.
When I decided to publish this novel, I realized it isn't quite a "Battlestations" novel but they share roots. I wrote "Deep Black" first as a series of screenplays during my hiatus from the gaming industry. When I started designing "Battlestations" I needed aliens so I just borrowed from my "Deep Black" story. I changed a few of the aliens to make them more suitable for gaming and introduced cloning technology to allow people to keep their characters after a ship explosion.
Fletcher Hawkins is a clever guy with a good heart trying to make sense of things and figure out who is behind the serial genocide wiping out aliens by the planetful. He's also trying to keep a lid on his volatile team.
James "Cookie" Vincent was born dependent upon a cybernetic brain for autonomic functions. He's more than adapted to it but his penchant for tinkering causes as many problems as it solves.
Ferdinand "Freddie the Hammer" Lindstrom was constructed to be perfect but he was raised in a moral vacuum. He has total control of his superhuman body. Or does it have total control over him?
Ariel Ventano was young and beautiful but the ambitions of a cruel man destroyed her life and family. She was genetically re-engineered to enhance her beauty and reflexes but it left her with a burning hatred and deadly skills.
Be prepared for a harrowing journey that explores what it means to be human set on the vast stage that is the galaxy.
