"Afro-Jersey" is the music of classy American folksinger Terre Roche seamlessly blended with the hypnotic rhythms of Guinean djembe master Sidiki Conde. Joined by brilliant bassist, and secret crooner, Marlon Cherry, this band is a unique coupling of master musician/storytellers in a provocative new sound.
"Afro-Jersey" has been writing, arranging and playing songs together, here in New York City, where they live, for the past three years. Sidiki Conde is a global treasure who has overcome handicaps that would stop lesser souls and emerged as a world class musician. The improbable story of how Sidiki, from deepest black Africa and Terre from deepest white New Jersey met and became friends comes pouring out in the live shows as they sing, play and laugh their way through the set, powered with the unerring instincts of veteran multi-instrumentalist Marlon Cherry. The goal is to render a thrilling collision of two musical cultures. The lyrics -- in English and Mandingo -- speak to intimate and global concerns in rich, potent harmonies over meticulous musical riffs. This joyful collision reveals a common spirit that defies geography.
This special recording will be birthed by producer Roger Greenawalt, who played all 185 Beatles songs on ukulele in one day. He produced "The Manson Family" an avante garde opera in which Terre sang the role of Squeaky Fromme. Some extraordinary guest artists who have graced our live performances will sprinkle their magic into the mix as we realize this dream. This CD is going to be one serious dose of ear candy!
