We want to paint a mural with young people and take on the world. Public art, collaboration and community engagement in action.
In short, Cori (aka HardCor) and Dan ( aka the Danimal) will be taking over the world with our "bloody adventure" to Bogota, Colombia. Of course, we will be hard at work mentoring youth and creating a massive mural project that will be culturally relevant and frickin spectacular to look at! We want to blind people with AWESOMENESS......and show them how to see again. Let us get there together, your pledge will help ignite the creative juices of our young artists and link up the Americas once and for all.
C & D
- Work with the youth and staff of Museo de los Ninos, a children's museum in Bogota, Colombia, which houses the Intel Computer Clubhouse.
- Reach out to kids building relationships with under-served youth members (ages 10-18).
- Mentor and collaborate with members in completing a large-scale mural painting in the community
- Document the project in photos, drawings, video, thereby creating a multi-media showcase from January-April 2012.
We have done many collaborative projects with Gold Crown Computer Clubhouse kids in Denver, Colorado, some of them exhibited in major art galleries. We want to push the scale and nature of the work to Bogota for a couple reasons. Bogota houses one of the 1st Intel Computer Clubhouses, an international network of which we work with already. We hope to establish a separate, art-based program that can coexist with the clubhouse model. The director of this Clubhouse has welcomed this project idea with open arms, thus granting us an invitation. We have access to their resources, including: computer stations, video-editing software, art studio space, storage facilities, a children's museum, community outreach forums, translators (in case our Spanish skills have gone rusty), local schools, and logistical support. Not to mention we will be able to work with the youth members of the Clubhouse.

Bogota is one of the largest cities in the Americas. It hosts a wide array of cultural riches, from indigenous languages and thought, to contemporary art and style. We know that in education and in the arts, we have the instruments to build a new generation of people and breed voice to those left voiceless. There is nothing more important to us than to sacrifice our protected little bubbles of life to affect the social reality of inclusive communities abroad.
Moreover, we want this mural project to address culturally relevant issues in Colombian life, while fostering self-empowerment opportunities. Those involved will have a platform to express their unique vision and literally share it with the world. Our goal is to facilitate that through collaboration, mutual understanding, community-building programs, and international exchanges.
How it's Going Down:
- Take a week to get to know everyone involved in the community in and around the Clubhouse including staff, youth members, community participants
- Give out survey to find out more information about the interests, backgrounds, and hopes of those involved
- Start the process of designing, planning, coordinating and executing a large-scale mural (the more money pledged, the larger it gets, the bigger the impact)
- Photograph the progress, photocopy sketches, copy rough drafts, film the work in progress, interview the kids, the staff, the parents, everyone!
Once we arrive in Bogota, we will get acquainted with our future muralists. After weeks of thoughtful discussion, heated debate, laughing, crying, eating snacks, and breaking down American/Colombian stereotypes, we should have an idea of what subject matter will be painted and how it should look. Weeks of designing, digitizing ideas, playing futbol, drafting, we should have an idea of how it will be done. Finally, after two months, the mural will be painted on a glorious wall which is yet to be decided....
Money for What?
Getting there. The cost of traveling to Bogota, Colombia is reasonable. This will be our biggest expense and because of that, we will be going 50/50 on the cost of our tickets.
Living expenses. For the most part, we will be staying at either a guesthouse, or with a generous host family/friend. We don't need 3 big meals a day to survive, but we also can't stomach greasy street food every night. A happy medium will be achieved. There will be miscellaneous expenses like extra toothpaste that we will gladly cover.
Project materials. If you have ever painted a mural before, or even just a large painting, then you know how the cost of paint can add up. We promise not to use the most expensive paint out on the market, or the fancy expensive brushes and rollers. Again, we are humble people, looking out for our wallets and yours! We will spend weeks researching the best options for paint quantities/qualities, spray cans, numbers of brushes, buckets, chalk, paper, etc. depending on the nature of the mural.
Thank you all for viewing and backing our project! Peace and love to all of you...Let's get it!!
