A transitional time in Haiti: From Disaster Relief to Development Aid
The work in Haiti is far from finished. 1 in 2 U.S. households donated after the 2010 earthquake. Although thousands of NGOs (Non Governmental Organizations) flooded Haiti post-quake, the realities of creating permanent, positive change in such a devastated country goes widely unrecognized. The world wanted to see immediate improvements. Now the question is being asked: What happened to the billions of dollars of aid that were donated? Has there been any improvement?
In April 2011, we traveled to Leogane, Haiti, the epicenter of the 2010 earthquake, to investigate what has been accomplished. We learned that there is an important distinction to be made between relief and development. Keeping people alive through medical and housing aid is very important. After that, basic skills must be learned in order for the individual to sustain themselves beyond the disaster. An ongoing system of hand outs, with no program of skill training, is profoundly deleterious to individuals, families and, ultimately, to entire communities.
Haiti is in a time of transition. Many NGOs are leaving due to other disasters in the world or because funding has dried up. This documentary will illuminate the pivotal transition of aid dollars from providing disaster relief to the creation of successful development efforts. This is a culture that has gone down so far that it has the ability to go up further and faster! However, it cannot improve without there being a hand up.
There is so much more to be said about Leogane and our project To know more please visit our website www.lejitproductions.com/blog or feel free to email with questions.
Aside from making post-production possible, your support of this project will ensure our continued work in Haiti. This is just part one of a three part series that will follow and promote successful development efforts. One of the most critical downfalls of community development in Haiti is the on-again – off-again attention of the international community. We hope to shine a light on the need for long term self-sustaining programs that will bring Haiti out of this reoccurring need for relief. Purposeful donations are instrumental. Effective documentation will share it with the world. That is our goal and passion and we can't do it without you!
The funding raised on Kickstarter will go directly to the post production costs to get this film up on the big screen.
1) Transcribing all of our interviews from Creole to English subtitles.
2) Transcoding and editing our footage
3) Securing music rights and sweetening the audio
4) Color correction and professional editing assistance.
Film festival fees as well as a distribution plan is also an expense.
Kickstarter is largest online fundraising platform specializing in creative projects. They operate on an all or nothing funding concept. So if we don't meet our full goal by the end of the 40 days then we get no money, all pledges will be cancled, and you will not be charged. This will ensure that if you support us, you will see a finished product.
We hope to shed some light on the realities on the ground in Leogane. Through this we hope that potential donors and developers see the necessity for effective sustainable giving.
We are also donating some of our footage to a local NGO in Leogane to use for fundraising efforts.
We are telling personal stories. We are not creating a newsworthy coverage piece on the devastation in Haiti, but rather the optimism that lies beneath the rubble, and the people that are doing small things to make a big difference. First and foremost we want to tell a great story, and through that we will uncover some big truths about foreign aid dependency and what it will take to break the vicious cycle of poverty in Haiti.
