5kStock.com is creating a new 1000 piece 5k definition footage library, that will offer 1 free clip for every $1 Kickstarter donation.
Instead of funding a documentary, why not fund all documentaries?
Josh and I are two guys who got into producing professional grade independent films, and in the process, went through some hard times trying to get those first few jobs to get started. Though we both eventually made it, and teamed up to produce larger feature films in the future, we remember how hard it was to break the ice with a video the first time.
For a number of reasons, all the major stock sites charge up to $300 a clip (more normally $140) and this makes it hard for even the most talented video creator or indie filmmaker to fund, or even illustrate, those critical first few projects.
This is a way for people without extensive resources to start putting out commercial product, and start making money to get their setup. Making commercials for example is one of the best ways to break into film or video production, and stock footage can get you there. Especially when you can make a $2,000 dollar commercial for a local business with $7 worth of stock footage.
But maybe you're an independent filmmaker that thinks stock wouldn't be useful to you. You'd be surprised to find out that many broadcast programs and documentaries rely on it a great deal. A narrative documentary film for example be comprised almost entirely of stock. Probably 40% of the discovery channel is stock footage, they just blend it well
A more common use for filmmakers would be to use stock for establishing shots. Show one of our clips of an LA mansion exterior, then cut to an interior shot of a room in your house. Now you can set your stories, videos, comedy, in a variety of locations.
And it's a huge cost saver. Of course we all want to give every frame of our films our own creative slant, and sometimes that's critical, but other times, there's no good reason why every filmmaker should have to rent a separate helicopter to film 1000's of nearly identical tree canopies. And if you're concerned about the environment, helicopters aren't necessarily the best thing for it.
A community-funded stock site could put an end to price gouging by large stock sites that charge sometimes hundreds per clip. This will helps even the playing field, give YouTube/Vimeo/Kickstarter video creators, indie filmmakers, and professionals alike a resource they can easily afford.
This concept has only recently become possible. With the advent of ultra-high-definition video recording (4-5 times the resolution of HD), cinema-quality footage is now possible on a budget. (But mainly because we already most of the equipment needed)
So if we have all of the equipment, what do the funds we raise pay for?
Travel expenses, local transportation, location permits, lens rentals, film crew, filters, camera mobility and stabilization equipment, lighting, models, items to break in slow motion, hotel, props, costume, the list goes on. Really it's amazing that we could pull off something this large for so little.
What do we have right now, What cameras will this library be filmed on?
We have 2 Red Epic-M cameras coming in before this campaign ends, we also have 2 full sets of cinema grade lenses, worth around $100,000 total. This is the same camera rig being used by James Cameron, on Avatar 2, and Peter Jackson, on The Hobbit.
When can I get my library?
We should have the entire library available by Jan 7, but we'll probably have some libraries up even sooner, maybe late November. We do have to go film them first.
I'm not a filmmaker, or video creator, why should I back this project?
Because it helps struggling filmmakers around the world get started into careers in a way they can afford. Imagine if instead of pledging $1000 dollars to one film, that same pledge could reduce the costs of 100 of those films by $3,000 each. This project could potentially turn into a wellspring of great documentary or indie films, with dozens of libraries spanning hundreds of topics, all at a price even students can easily afford.
Be sure to watch our video, check out some of our rewards, donate what you can. Thank you for helping make 5kStock.com a reality!

We're experienced professionals, with a lot of combined experience. For us, this is easy to get right once the funding is there.
We'll be using the Epic-M camera, and a set of Ziess Super Speed Primes, as well as whatever specialty optics we can afford to rent or buy once logistical costs are covered
About 6-8 weeks shooting, and about 4-6 weeks post production
The library should be fully online by January 7, 2012.
You will be immediately notified when your clips are available.
