About this project
I am producing four 24" x 20" digital, exhibition prints on high quality Fuji Matte paper, surface mounted on aluminum with a UV coating and an aluminum hanging bracket to be shown in Southern, a group show curated by artist and historian Judith McWillie which will be held at ATHICA: Athens Institute for Contemporary Art, January 21- March 4, 2012. Additionally, I will need funding to transport the artwork from New York to the exhibition space in Athens, Ga.
The images are from photographs I took in my brother John Seawright's home and studio immediately following his sudden death ten years ago. We had often discussed collaborating on a project sharing ideas and material like we had in our younger years, unfortunately these still lifes are as close as we ever came to realizing that.
Many people knew and loved John as a poet and as a chronicler of Georgia's hidden history in his Ghost Fry column and from his articles in the Oxford American, as well as being a larger than life figure in Athens lore. He was an endless source of fascinating stories, an amazing wealth of knowledge, a politician and a preacher.
My goal, through this exhibition of images, articles and poems, is to continue to keep John's memory alive and to expand his wonderful writing and art to a new and larger audience.
